The Experience

On the outskirts of little Valréas is a 17th-century château immersed in a sea of vines. New to winemaking, Benoit and Eugenie are passionate about wines and guests, and will give you a chance to taste their award-winning vintage. Delicious breakfast (homemade cakes, jams, Bulgarian yogurt) is brought to a room with small tables and a stone fireplace with drawn angels. Bedrooms reveal the best of everything: round sinks, antique sofas, aged tommette floors; it is an exquisite restoration. Set off for the gourmet markets of Nyons and Vaison-la-Romaine, explore vineyards on château bikes, return to an octagonal pool set in a vast decked terrace.

Reviews

Extremely friendly and knowledgeable hosts in this pretty château and vineyards. Wonderful breakfasts and dinners created by Evgenia and interesting tour of cave and wine tasting by Benoit. All recommended restaurants in the area were perfect. The bedrooms were very well appointed with comfortable beds and lots of space. We had a wonderful stay in a beautiful part of France.

Very warm welcome. Lovely spacious bedroom and well equipped bathroom. Informative visit to the chai ( wine tasting room). Learnt more about the process of wine making and tasted 6 wines. Ordered some to take home and then ate our dinner on the terrace by the pool. Lovely food and wine. Substantial breakfast. Our hosts were always there to help if required and were very friendly. We will most certainly return if in the area.

We stayed here as we travelled South. We had a brilliant stay, the food was delicious and we ate on the table outside with both Madame and Monsieur being helpful and friendly to us and our children. The chateau is old and cool, the furniture is nearly all beautiful antiques and our rooms were clean and comfortable. We also enjoyed a wine tasting before dinner and bought some to take with us. We also have contact details to buy more! Highly recommend this place although it is not close to the motorway.

Roseanna, London

We had a wonderful time at Chateau Montplaisir. Benoit and Evgenia were such attentive hosts and always were there to help make our stay even more perfect. The rooms are airy and beautiful, the surrounding area is stunning and we had a wonderful time sampling the delicious wines and eating dinner on the terrace. We would highly recommend visiting this chateau as we hope to return one day soon!

The Fagans, London

I traveled to MontPlaisir with my father for his birthday and had a wonderful experience. The Chateau was magnificent, the food was even better, and the wine was immaculate. The service was also amazing and I will definitely be venturing back as soon as I can so I can experience the new renovations!

We spent 4 wonderful days in that beautiful place in August. We indulged ourselves in the authentic, relaxing atmosphere of the Provence - the old chateau, nicely renovated, still keeping it's atmosphere, the gentle breeze blowing in the tall, old trees surrounding the property, the constant singing of the cicadas... The hosts were very welcoming, the homemade jams and yoghurt were delicious, not to mention the flavour intensity of wine they produce. Claude and Elina, August 2017

Local points of interest from Benoit Chaignon

  • Taste the wines of the property - white, rose and reds, presented by the winemaker, who will share with you his passion and will unveil some of the mystery of making wine.
  • You are a 15-minutes drive from the picturesque provencal markets in the towns of Vaison-la-Romaine and Nyons. Stroll among the stalls with colourful fresh produce, savour the smells of Provence, buy artisanal soaps, lavender oil or a provencal tablecloth.
  • On 23rd June is the Night of Petit St Jean. Very picturesque tradition, unique only in Valreas when a little boy is elected to be the little St Jean. The event is celebrated by a procession of people in medieval costumes, parading the streets after sunset.
  • Corso de la Lavande beginning of August – folklore groups and orchestras gather to celebrate the end of the lavender season with music, dances and night parades along the streets of the town. Concenrts and events during 4 days
  • The Truffle Museum and truffle market in Richerenches (10min drive from Valreas), known as the truffle capital of France. Watch interactive videos and learn new recipes, buy and taste fresh truffles!
  • Les Chateaux de la Drome – visit the castles in the area (9 to 21 km from Valreas) – Château Grignan, Château Suze la Rousse – beautifully restaured, now they are a stage for many cultural events, concerts, festivals
