The Experience
In the ancient heart of Arles, a fascinating 17th-century mansion. Warm vibrant Julia is curator of aesthetics, cultured conversation and a gallery that combines art with hospitality. Flagstones, fireplaces and original panelling abound, homemade jams at breakfast accompany a stylish tea selection and occasional dinners are paired with wine from friends’ vineyards. And staircases wind past Chinese scrolls to your suite: exquisite tommette tiles, dreamy ‘ciel de lit,’ restored frescoes, marble touches and a small mosaic shower room with a gilded mirror. Explore Arles, a town ripe for discovery, enjoy the Camargue wilds!

The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Julia de Bierre
- UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981, with outstanding Roman, medieval and Renaissance buildings. A walker's paradise, with discoveries on every street.
- Several world class Museums & Contemporary Art Foundations. The metal-faceted Frank Gehry designed LUMA Foundation. (WIP).Arles also inspired Vincent Van Gogh, who painted some of his most celebrated works whilst living here.
- Annual Photography, Arts and Music Festivals. Arles provides an extraordinary backdrop for the prestigious 'Rencontres d'Arles' photography festival which for over 40 years takes place during July /August /September.
- Wonderful Provençal Market, lots of locally-grown organic produce, superb wines, good selection of restaurants. And you won't have to worry about driving after that extra glass of wine since you can just walk home to Galerie Huit !.
- Nearby : National Park of the Camargue - a beautiful area of wetland, protected from the sea, famous for its bulls, white horses, cowboys, gypsies and boasting over 400 species of birds.Or head to the affluent Alpilles, with its picture perfect villages.
- Bohemian, subtly sophisticated, culturally rich, yet financially still one of the poorer towns of Provence, Arles appeals to travellers seeking that increasingly rare and precious commodity : authenticity.

We were delighted with our choice of accommodation. Julia is the very best of hostesses who welcomes you, introduces you to other guests, and ensures you know the significant places to visit in this beautiful small city. While most of the accommodation consists of rooms, we stayed in one of the two small studios. It had an attractive view of the streets outside. We had two rings to cook on, which meant we didn't have pressure to eat out each night, and there was a small dishwasher too. I can highly recommend Maison Huit.
