The Experience
Five hectares of land surrounds you: wide terraced lawns, lavender, rosemary, oleander and pine, ancient oak and olive plantations, a proud fig – the unmistakable smells of Provence. Eat outside on the shaded terrace, dip toes in the raised stone pool, feel the palpable history in the flagstone pathways. You’re secluded, but not isolated.
Almost all the windows in this former sheephouse face south over the garden, so inside is lit by the soft light that suffuses a Provençal evening. Built in the traditional style, it’s long and low though bright inside – a place where less is more and restorative in its simplicity: a cosy living room with vast beams and an open fire, bathrooms in rustic Salernes tiles, modern comforts in the kitchen.
The serene surrounds would make a perfect writer’s retreat with the only interruptions being birdsong. Break up the day with walking, riding, cycling, tennis. Drive to Grasse in 20 minutes, and the Côte d’Azur in half an hour.

Location
The neighbourhood
Drive through two stone pillars and bump along a woodland track to a clearing – all the windows face the other way, so your first impressions are of high walls and a solitary window frame. There are neighbours but none in view. Walk to the small town of Saint-Cézaire in 20 minutes and enjoy the views above the gorge of the Siagne River. There you’ll find restaurants, a minimart, a Saturday market – everything you might need, with more options in the perfume capital of Grasse (14km).
Local points of interest from Bernard Steck
- St Cézaire, just 3 minutes away; on Saturday’s visit the farmers market on the village square. Next to fruit & produce, stands with honey, artisan dry sausages, olives, tasty cheeses. Just stroll around with your Pastis glass in your hand. True Provence!
- St Cézaire is overlooking the 400m deep canyon of the Siagne river. Numerous hiking trails criss-cross the valley and lead to the river-bed which carries lots of water, even in summer. Wild swimming in the river!
- Just minutes away from the Bergerie, visit the deep caves of St Cézaire. Formed some 6 million years ago, you enter the realm of the imaginary and of the marvelous. Easy access and suitable for families with children.
- Just 15 minutes by car is Grasse, world capital of the perfume makers. Visit the perfumeries and their museums located in historic buildings which all end at the factory shop. Good buys.
- The Mediterranean Sea at Cannes is just 30 mins away. What a change from the secluded dwelling & the rustic villages you are coming from! A true destination town with shopping, restaurants, spotting the rich & famous on their yachts, swimming in the sea.
- The museum trail is just tremendous within a 50km stretch. Think of Fondation Maeght in Vence; the Musée Picasso in Antibes; the Musée Matisse in Nice; the Musée Bonnard in Le Cannet; or the Musée Océonagraphique in Monaco. Wonderful day trips !

Introducing
Bernard Steck
Bernard’s parents bought La Bergerie in the 1970s and have lavished love and care on the house and grounds. It’s been in the family ever since, under the gentle attention of housekeeper Nadine who’s been with the family almost as long as the house. Bernard lives in Switzerland but Nadine will be on hand should you need anything.
Definitely a house for the most restorative rest in an utterly beautiful and typically Provençal setting.
