The Experience

A 1930s Riviera hotel with a pool in a palm grove and exotic birds in cages. Indoors, Hôtel Windsor has introduced the Thirties to the 21st century by asking contemporary artists to decorate some of the rooms. The result is gifts of wit, provocation, flights of fancy and minimalist sobriety: Joan Mas’s La Cage à Mouche, cosmopolitan Ben’s writing on the walls, Antoine Beaudoin’s frescoes of Venice, Egypt, India – and Tintin, all-time favourite.

Plain white beds have contrasting cushions or quilts, furniture is minimal but interesting, little bathrooms are delightful and one room is painted in glimmering gold. Clear bright colours everywhere, including the richly exotic public areas; the hotel is passionate about contemporary art and chooses a different artist every year to reinvent the lobby.

Outside, a tropical garden is a good spot for breakfast on warm days among bamboo, a giant rubber tree and swathes of bougainvillea.

Reviews

Hotel Windsor was a delight. The gardens! An oasis – wonderful place to sit. Also a good location, 10 mins from the train station, 4 mins from the sea. You really feel the owners love being hoteliers, love art, love Nice. The staff here were great. Room was bright, with unqiue artwork.

Walking through the lobby and seeing all the art and sculptures is a real joy but the tropical garden with huge rubber tree, parakeets in the aviary and the pool is a stunning surprise in an essentially urban environment. You can choose your Artist-designe room online - and it's fun to decide what colour/style and artist most suits your stay, everything from Aztec to gold leaf to Le Petit Prince.

Jon, Sawday's Inspector

Stepping off the streets of Nice and into the Hotel Windsor is immediately calming. The hotel is relaxed and full of art; the garden an oasis of foliage and huge moon over the pool; the rooms are varied - the ones looking over the garden are particularly roomy with artistic floor to ceiling paintings by various artists on the walls. A real pleasure.

Patrick, Sawday's Inspector

A great stay in a unique hotel with heaps of character, helpful staff and the lovely garden and pool. We loved it and are going back! The lift is extraordinary and worth taking at least once. The classic building with contemporary art made for a wonderful experience.

Pippa, Briancon

Good location and facilities, lovely room and staff.

Cathy

A delightful, well priced small hotel of character equi-distanced between the sea, the Old Town and the station. The art work was fun, the garden immaculate and a lovely retreat. There was an outdoor unheated pool. Breakfast and dinner excellent ( had roaring wood fire in the evening). The art work was thought provoking: the "rocket launch" commentary in the lift made me giggle every time! I would stay here again.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're bang in the middle of the city so within walking distance of shops, restaurants, bars, cafés and culture. There are plenty of city tours to join: take a stroll down the Promenade des Anglais which takes you into the old town and markets, book tickets to the opera, wander round the cathedral and the Palais Lascaris. The hotel is just three blocks from the sea and the Bay of Angels.

Local points of interest from Odile Redolfi

  • Enjoy one of our massages. There is a big choice to pamper yourself
  • Enjoy a dinner in our tropical garden in summer or around the fire place in our restaurant in winter.
  • Visit the numerous muséums of Nice, like the Matisse, Chagall or Contemporary Art museum
  • Have a look at our art exhibition in the lobby, which changes every year.
  • Visit the Old Town with it's flowermarket every day (except on Mondays: then it's Antique Market)
  • In summer you can ask for a reduction ticket at the reception desk for one of the private beaches (Sporting Plage)

Introducing

Odile Redolfi

The hotel has been in the same family for over 80 years, hence the informal friendly atmosphere. It is run by a well-trained team of staff, headed up by the Manager Jeroen.
