The Experience

The setting is so romantic you might imagine bumping into Rapunzel’s prince, sword in hand and urgently calling to the top windows. A series of grand terraces, stairways and balustrades swoop down to a tree-lined avenue, inspired by the Italian renaissance. You have a private terrace on a different level, hidden away with lovely green views. Inside is suitably pared-back and unfussy: tiled floors, some exposed stone walls, lots of light and space, books and games.

Up steep wooden stairs find the master bedroom with its en suite bathroom, up another flight for a double and a twin sharing a shower room. All have magnificent views. The open-plan kitchen and dining room has a roomy table and doors out to the terrace for easy summer lunches. A welcome pack of fresh French produce will be waiting.

Set off on endless walks, drift in the pool, play a game of tennis, stroll to a bakery and a decent restaurant.

Reviews

We had a thoroughly pleasant stay at La Tour, managing to balance entertaining our three boys with the peace and tranquility of the surrounding French landscape. The accommodation was great and all were very welcoming. I will never grow tired of French patisserie and wine! Time to go on a diet.

Tim, Derby

What a magical place! We stayed for a week as a family of four plus our dog. The tower has the great blend of feeling a bit remote in the French countryside while being close to people with a little bar, bread shop and grocery store all steps away. It has the magic of staying in a castle with the amenities of a nice kitchen and a pool! I hadn’t been to this area of France before and am now wanting to come back to enjoy the night markets, landscape and laidback, friendly atmosphere again!

La Tour is a fantastic place to stay. Beautiful, relaxing, peaceful and set in lovely grounds. It's exceptionally well equipped - they have thought of everything! Some holiday lets have a veneer of polish and quality, one that turns out to be only skin deep, but this is a genuinely comfortable place to stay. Great beds and high-end linens stood out. Loads to do on site - a heated pool, table tennis, croquet, and tennis courts too. We lounged a lot on the terrace - lazy lunches and a snooze in the shade on the outdoor sofa. Fab bakery a few mins walk away too. Perfect.

We really loved the tower. It was grand and homely, an unusual combination, and, despite the gloomy weather, was very comfortable. The grounds were a delight, and the area around was also very beautiful (we loved Brantôme). Best of all, the owners are so friendly and helpful, they are a real delight to deal with.

Great spot in Charras. We had a great time. The tower and surround grounds are fantastic. The place was spotlessly clean and very well equipped. The hosts were very friendly and helpful with recommendations for things to do in the area.

Pete, Ireland

We stayed at the breathtaking La Tour for nearly 2 weeks. The property and the surroundings are truly stunning and like something from a fairytale. La Tour is well equipped with all your essentials too. There are many things to do in the area if you are willing to drive a little. Locally you have everything you need for the day to day. We had a fabulous time. Thank you!

Carolyn, Abingdon

Very tastefully furnished medieval tower in a beautiful setting: in the middle of an old chateau, overlooking the plane and hills, with a gorgeous morning sun and shadow from the summer heat in the afternoon. Indeed, it is equipped with everything you need for a perfect french holiday - and the bakery with fresh croissant is just a 100 m away (and a pub just in front!). The beds are very comfortable and we slept wonderfully! Beautiful is to sit on the terasse in the night and watch the stars and the moon rising over the peacefully ligtended landscape!

Karl, Munich, Germany

The tower is an memorable place to stay- with views far out across the pretty countryside, incredible sunrises and sunsets, historic gardens with lots of terraces and beautiful stone staircases to explore and a beautiful pool. The rooms are big considering its a medieval tower. We had a lovely holiday there!

Olympia, Saumur, France

We had the best stay at La Tour! The house was stunning and had everything we needed for a family holiday. The kitchen was well equipped and there were tons to keep the kids entertained. The setting is beautiful, and the chateau grounds are really safe so the kids could have some free time running around which meant we could enjoy quiet g&ts on the terrace. Sarah and the welcome team were lovely throughout the booking and check in and out process, we couldn't have asked for more! We'd love to come back again soon! Thank you xx

Jennie, Solihull

Everyone needs to spend a holiday in a tower at some stage of their lives to wake in the morning and gaze out the window at the dominion stretching out and imagining what the view looked like 500 years ago. The interiors are tasteful, the grounds are listed, there's a giant pool and tennis court to keep everyone entertained for days and its in the middle of a protected area. Utter bliss!

Location

The neighbourhood

You're on the edge of a small village in a deeply rural area between Charente, Dordogne and Limousin. Le Tournesol is in the village and although simple does good pizzas and salads. A further ten minutes away is Le Petit Restaurant with fantastic food. The towns of Angoulême and Brantôme are just half an hour, there are some wonderful markets and châteaux, and rivers for kayaking.

Local points of interest from Sarah Kent

  • Piegut-Pluviers, 40 mins away, a huge street market, a true ‘marche alimentaire‘, with fascinating brocante stalls to trawl through as you go. Quaint little cafes are tucked away in leafy corners to sit and dive into a book or just enjoy people watching!
  • Brantome, 30 mins away, a must on Friday market mornings. Get there by 10am as stalls start packing up around midday. One of the most beautiful villages in France with its river moat, canoes, cafes galore, Benedictine Abbey and troglodyte caves.
  • Aubeterre sur Dronne, 45 mins away, a beautiful Charente village here. It too has a market once a week and a gorgeous square for coffee and dining amongst the shade if it gets a little hot. There’s also the delight of a sandy river beach to cool off in.
  • Angouleme, 20 mins away, an absolute ‘must’ for all classic car enthusiasts during ‘Le Circuit des Ramparts’ in September. The town’s historic walls form a challenging racing track, the noise of these classic cars racing round will never, ever leave you!
  • Angouleme is rich with shopping opportunities from the usual French high street retailer to those nestled in the older part of the town where beautiful individual little boutiques are to be explored before taking time out for a leisurely terrasse lunch.
  • Etang Saint-Estephe, 30 mins away, a flat, easy hour long walk around the lake’s shores. There’s a quaint little pully boat for a short cut across the lake about halfway round for weary legs! A restaurant overlooks the sandy lakeside beach and a petit cafe
