The Experience

The large, open-plan living space is light, bright and very attractive with books, TV, board games and lots of seating at both the dining table and on comfortable sofas and chairs. This room opens out onto the terrace with tables for al fresco meals, one in the sun and the other under the shade of a pergola.

Cooking couldn’t be easier, either in the kitchen with sociable island, or outdoors with barbecue, sink and wine fridge. Play pétanque, flounce about in the pool, sprawl on the lawn or find a quiet place to read. As night falls watch a myriad of stars appear, made bigger and better by a handy telescope.

Bedrooms (two en suite downstairs and two sharing a bathroom upstairs) are a good size and have the best mattresses, stylish bedding and plenty of throws, cushions and pillows. Everything here is generous spirited, including the welcome hamper; a chef can be summoned and bespoke tasting events arranged. Simply enjoy it all.

Reviews

Stunning, luxury converted distillery in Challignac. High end furnishings & appliances. Beautiful interior design, air conditioned, with amazing outdoor pool, spacious patio, cushioned loungers, sofas & outside dining with BBQ, Boules court & children’s play area, surrounded by beautiful gardens. The beds were so comfortable, the showers were fantastic, everything is top notch. Mark & Gary made our week with great recommendations of places to visit & superb restaurants. They responded instantly to requests, but were respectful of our privacy unless we contacted them. We cannot recommend enough.

Antony, Exeter

This is the easiest and most satisfying review we’ve ever written. Quite simply, Mark & Gary are two of the warmest and thoughtful people we have ever met and they have created the most wonderful home in a perfect rural location that it almost seems too good to be true……….but it isn’t. Everything about La Distillerie encourages you to unwind and relax. We would love to keep La Distillerie as our own little secret and not share it with anybody, but of course we can’t. So regretfully we have to everybody that we have found the perfect destination with the perfect hosts. C’es magnifique.

Anita

La Distillerie has been beautifully planned and is comfortable, spacious and stylish. The seamless indoor/outdoor living is perfect for large families or small groups, whether relaxing by the pool and listening to the birdsong, looking at the stars through the telescope provided, or pottering to local towns and villages for a morning baguette or glass of rosé.

Location

The neighbourhood

This is a real 'get away from it all' sanctuary and you're surrounded by fields, wildflower meadows, vines and a peaceful wood with marked trails. Nearby Condéon has a charming restaurant with outdoor seating and as well as serving delicious food they also sell some food, along with fresh bread. For bigger shops head to Barbezieux. Angoulême is 40 minutes for the TGV to Bordeaux or Paris.

Local points of interest from Mark Stapleton

  • Lac bleu de Guizengeard, just a 10 minute drive away where you can experience an easy hike to view the spectacular vista points of this naturally occurring aqua coloured lake system.
  • La Base de Plein in Nabinaud, 25 minutes drive will take you into a forest base adventure ground where you can experience zip lines and tree based activities.
  • Aubeterre sur Dronne, a 25 minute drive to one of the prettiest towns in France where you can meander around the quaint shops, explore the monolithic church, eat and drink at one of many bars and eateries and, go canoeing and kayaking on the Dronne.
  • Conte & Filles Vignoble a local vineyard with amazing views , is family run anchored on the limestone valleys of Charente. A visit to the vineyard is highly recommended including cognac and pinot tasting and shopping for local artisan products.
  • Aqua-Jump, St Yrieix. 34mins drive. Here is a large activity centre based around a variety of huge inflatable obstacle courses built on a huge lake with a man made beach, fantastic day out for all the family.
  • La Distillerie de Challignac is a 5 star rated establishment by the L'Office de tourisme de Charente Sud.

Introducing

Mark Stapleton

Mark and Gary, whose house is attached but completely out of sight, designed, planned and project managed the renovation themselves. They moved from the Manchester area to live their rural French dream and generously share it with guests. They've thought of everything to make your holiday really happy and free from stress.
