The Experience
The large open-plan living and kitchen area is a joyful space with wooden floorboards, a sumptuous sofa and armchair and a super kitchen separated by an island for sociable cooking. There is bright artwork, upcycled furniture, a record player with some vinyl and a sweet dining table. Two lovely bedrooms upstairs (one double is smaller) have Emma mattresses, blackout blinds and views over rows of vines and sunflowers.
Find all the basics for cooking waiting for you along with vegan recipe books, homemade sweet treats and a bottle of local wine and you can eat on the terrace, or cycle 10 minutes into Tusson for a restaurant or pizza. Settle in the communal courtyard for a sundowner, roam the fertile garden and orchard, or take a little path down to the shared pool for a cooling dip and a sunbathe.
Wild swimmers can head to lakes with ample beaches, kayakers can slide down the river Charente, peace seekers can doze.

Location
The neighbourhood
Tusson, an arty village, is very pretty with stone lanes, trompe l'œil in some of the windows, hollyhocks galore and a very French feel. You'll find a deli, cake shop and tearoom as well as places to eat. There are Neolithic sites to explore and studios to visit including stained glass, sculpture and pottery. Drive 40 minutes to beautiful Angoulême for dining, shopping or people-watching.
Local points of interest from Jen & Nick Thompson
- You can walk from the gîte through the vineyards and sunflower fields into the beautiful historic village of Tusson. The walk takes around 35 minutes. You can enjoy incredible homemade cakes and coffee at the very popular cafe, Gateaux.
- visit the neolithic sites dotted around the village, or visit one of the several artisan makers including stain glass makers, sculptors and potters.
- You can drive to the incredibly beautiful city of Angoulême in 40 minutes and visit the Comic book museum or do a tour of all the fascinating murals around the city. There are many great places to dine, shop or people watch in a pavement cafe.
- In 15 minutes you can be kayaking down the idyllic River Charente. There is a great local hire shop that rents kayaks or pedalos and there is no better way to while away a sunny afternoon.
- Just 10 minutes drive away is a wonderful vegan and organic cognac house, where you can go and tour their vineyard and see how their cognac, pineau and wine is made, before the all important tasting session!
- If you don't fancy driving to La Rochelle or one of the islands, you can still swim and enjoy sunbathing in one of the many nearby lakes. Les Gours is a 15 minute drive and is very peaceful, has ample beach area for sunbathing and swimming.

Introducing
Jen & Nick Thompson
Young and gifted Jen is a freelance music manager and her husband Nick (you'll see some of his photographs on the walls) runs an art gallery. They sold up in London to move to the sunny Charente and realise their dream of renovating a French property to run as a vegan retreat. Their story was filmed by Channel 4 for 'A New Life in the Sun'. They can organise fridge fills ahead for you.
The young, dynamic owners' welcome is warm and smiley – naturally welcoming with offers of homemade cake and coffee, and plenty of fuss from Betty the dog in her rainbow neckerchief! Everything flows, from their bright smiles, cool style, hip colours and a fresh outlook on the area. Just a lovely place to use as a base for exploring the vineyards and pretty Charente villages.
