The Experience

The pretty pale stone and wooden shutters are redolent of so many buildings in France but the fresh and vibrant interiors are a breath of fresh air. There’s a light, arty feel with some beautiful mid-century pieces and splashes of abstract colour on the walls here and there. The large kitchen is a boon for those who love to cook and the owners offer a fridge-fill service and two breakfasts if you stay a week – all vegan.

Roomy bedrooms (one downstairs with direct access to the little private terrace at the back of the house) are charming and one has a balcony – perfect for coffee while gazing over the sunflower fields. A string of lights lead you down a secret path to the pool and you can also use the big courtyard, garden and orchard.

Walk, cycle, visit nearby villages and towns, take a day trip to Angoulême for shops, museums and galleries.

Reviews

We had the most incredible time at La Cour de Husson. What a gem of a place... design led, stunning gites which are equipped with thoughtful touches throughout. The rooms are spacious, the beds are the best I have ever slept on and the kitchen (speaking as a cook) worked so well! The grounds and the pool are well away from the gites so my free range kids letting of steam at the pool didn't feel intrusive. Lots of nice places to perch in the sun too. Pool is deep enough to jump in but not too deep to be unsafe for non-swimmers. Nick and Jen are the kindest, most welcoming hosts.

We travelled as a family of 10 and all ages (3 to 74) loved it.The gites are lovely - clean, spacious, well designed and tastefully decorated. Also very generously stocked with a welcome hamper, dishwasher tablets, tea towels and cleaning products, loo roll etc. Barbecues are large and easy to use. The pool and pool area is fantastic. There is plenty of space for kids to play, table tennis, places to relax and read. The hosts Jen & Nick are so helpful, really friendly and excellent chefs - their breakfasts were the highlight of our meals and the honesty bar ice creams were a complete hit.

Mike, London

We enjoyed the most wonderful week at La Cour de Husson. The Gite was both beautifully presented and absolutely spotless. Jen and Nick (and Betty the dog) are wonderful hosts who have thought of everything and made us feel completely at home. Nothing was too much trouble. This is a very special place within easy reach of idyllic villages and towns. The perfect place for a quintessentially French holiday.

Lucy, London

Cannot recommend highly enough. Our gite was beautiful: well equipped, spotlessly clean, comfortable and stylish. The swimming pool was great: kids loved playing in it, we loved lounging by it. It was really peaceful - you're surrounded by vast sunflower fields - yet interesting towns and cities were easy drives away. Most of all though, we can't praise our hosts Nick and Jen enough. They were welcoming, helpful and generous, and provided us with some of the best breakfasts we've ever eaten. Truly worthy of a 5-star review.

Abigail, London

The young, dynamic owners welcome is warm and smiley - naturally welcoming with offers of homemade cake and coffee and plenty of fuss from Betty the dog in her rainbow neckerchief! Everything flows, from their bright smiles, cool style, hip colours and a fresh outlook on the area. Just a lovely place to use as a base to explore the vineyards and pretty Charente villages from on foot, bike or car.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're in a little clump of farm buildings perched at the edge of the historic village of Tusson - a magnet for artists and potters. Lose yourself in the pretty stone lanes with tumbling hollyhocks and Trompes-l'œil in various windows around the village, find good restaurants, a deli, cake shop and tea room. Visit gorgeous Verteuil-sur-Charente, kayak in the river, taste Cognac, feel French.

Local points of interest from Jen & Nick Thompson

  • You can be winding down the stunning River Charente on a kayak or paddleboard within 15 minutes from the house.
  • We have the most incredible sunrises and sunsets, watch from the balcony with a coffee or a glass from wine!
  • Walk to the area renowned Gateaux in 30 minutes or a 2 minute drive. It's a very sought after tea room and flower shop, they have a huge array of homemade cakes every day, always with at least one vegan option too. Definitely worth a visit or three.
  • Take a walk through the sunflower fields which surround the house and whole area in the summer, it's really quite magical walking amongst them.
  • Let us book you a local cognac tasting tour, we are surrounded by Cognac vineyards and there are lots of wonderful distilleries in the area that offer tours and more importantly tastings!

Introducing

Jen & Nick Thompson

Young and gifted Jen is a freelance music manager and her husband Nick (you'll see some of his photographs on the walls) runs an art gallery. They sold up in London to move to the sunny Charente and realise their dream of renovating a French property to run as a vegan retreat. Their story was filmed by Channel 4 for 'A New Life in the Sun'. They can organise fridge fills ahead for you.
