The Experience

A lovely, sunlit house with plenty of room for everybody – find three separate seating areas, one outside, a formal sitting room and an open-plan kitchen/dining/living room with doors to the garden. With a dining table for 10 and rattan sofas, this is a great spot for entertaining too. There are two barbecues – a charcoal Weber plus a big gas one – lawns spacious enough to play football on, hammocks, an ancient oak tree, and a pool to cool off in surrounded by loungers. You’ll spend most of your time in the garden and you’ll find outdoor games waiting.

For those few chilly days you can light a fire and settle with a good book or cook up a storm in the top-notch kitchen with a welcome basket and plenty of basics to get you started. Bedrooms, two with en suites, are a good size with storage space and pretty views; the four bathrooms are sparkling.

The village is a simple one with a bakery and a small supermarket.

Reviews

We’ve had a lovely time. It’s a beautiful house with everything we could need - we’ve barely left since the kids have loved the pool!

Kate, UK

Wonderful stay in a beautiful house.

A beautiful house in a beautiful village. Thoughtfully equipped with everything we needed and lovely owners who were always responsive to any questions. A wonderfully relaxing holiday!

Keith, London

We had a fabulous week staying in the beautiful and tranquil Maison Cypres. The house is very well furnished and equipped, with a huge kitchen / dining area and a big outside eating area as well. There are two barbecues and the kitchen contains every appliance you can think of. We spent much of our time reading, on the veranda in the heat of the sun or out by the pool otherwise. It's all very well set up for a relaxing and luxurious stay.

Thank you! Maison Cypres has been the absolute perfect place to spend our holiday! Such a beautiful house, location so well equipped, the pool and garden... so relaxing. We couldn't have wished for more and hope to return again.

The house is fabulous and has everything you need for a restful holiday. We played games in the outdoor lounge area and cooked food from the local market which was amazing. We cycled into the village through the beautiful sunflower fields to buy bread and coffee and the locals were friendly and helpful. We ate in Saint Jean D’Angeley most nights which is a quaint town and only a short drive. We will definitely return!

We were Sandra and Olivier’s first guests through Sawday’s. Exceptional hosts. The property is as described - large entertaining space, extensive garden, ideal for families. The house is impressively well-equipped including inflatables for the pool, water pistols, sports rackets, board games, Netflix, BBQ equipment, bicycles, an extra moveable single bed. It’s clearly been prepared with care. The location is a very quiet village, about 1 hour from the large urban hub La Rochelle. Probably the best thing about our stay was Sandra - flexible, attentive, hospitable. Thank you.

Tom, London

A big, spacious house for the perfect rural getaway for families and friends. the generous owners clearly want their guests to have a fabulous time and have thought of everything people might like. There are endless spaces to congregate or find a quiet spot- from the outdoor sitting room, to the bench under the grandfather oak tree at the very far end of the garden.

Location

The neighbourhood

A sleepy, rural part of France. Saint-Jean-d'Angély is nearby, with a ruined abbey, lovely architecture and a good Saturday market – make sure you join the locals drinking wine in the morning in the cafés. The Jardin de Pomone is a ten-minute drive for splendid gardens and specimen fruit trees. Tackle water sports on the Port-D'Envaux lake, half an hour, or have a day out in La Rochelle.

Local points of interest from Sandra Lambert

  • The local village of Loulay (4 mins by car) offers a choice of two bread shops, a small Friday market and a stall with fresh oysters every Sunday morning in the market square.
  • Within an easy 35-minute drive to the coast, fabulous days can be spent on the beach on the Île d'Oléron, Royan, and the famous Île de Ré. Or just spend the day by the pool, or playing table tennis, croquet, badminton, boules or rounders at home!
  • The medieval market town of St Jean D'Angely is an easy 9-minute drive away. It offers a wide selection of bars and restaurants and twice weekly a market with local produce, fish and seafood.
  • The local area offers quiet roads and wonderful scenery for walking or cycling. Play boules in La Jarrie-Audouin, and swim or visit the tennis courts in Loulay or St Jean D'Angely.
  • Visit the producers of the local apéritif Pineau de Charentes for a tasting and tour.
  • Visit Cognac and take a tour of the famous estates, visit Saintes, Surgères and the surrounding areas, for history, brocantes and long lunches!
