The Experience

Sit and chat in the garden over a delicious summer dinner with your hosts. Cooking is high on their list of passions – as are history and art. In their 16th-century townhouse in the peaceful centre of Saintes, cookery books, antiques and ornaments abound.

Row or river-cruise down the Charente; it runs through this handsome, history-steeped town. Make a bee-line for the farmers’ markets; and the Roman amphitheatre, one of the oldest and largest in France.

Return to comfy bedrooms on the second floor, with modern bathrooms, antique tubs, and the warm, laid-back feeling of being in somebody’s home. Monique’s breakfasts are worth waking for: superb breads and homemade jams.

Reviews

I received such a lovely welcome from Monique & Jim into their home. Jam packed with treasures from their travels, an eclectic mixture of antique furniture & cookery books fill the rooms, the house has a real homely feel to it. The home cooked meal of tomato & feta cheese salad with herbs from the garden, smoked duck breast & vegetables was delicious. They are both experts on the area and are always on hand to advise where to go, what to see. A lovely place to visit.

We had the pleasure of staying a full week with Monique, James and Armande. We received such warm and friendly hospitality and it was just like being personal guests in their home. We dined in on 2 evenings and Monique produced delicious food with lots of herbs from the garden. Saintes is a beautiful town and we found lots of things to interest us. Being right in the centre was very convenient. We have lovely memories of drinking wine and chatting in the garden and we would be very keen to stay there again.

Lovely overnight stay with a delicious meal with our hosts. We had comfortable modern accommodation in a this characterful home. We would have liked to stay in Saintes for longer than one night and I’m sure we’ll return one day to see more of the city.

What a gem! We were lucky enough to spend a night at this house: the location could not be better, close to all the restaurants and bars of Saints but on a quiet street. Monique and James have created a very special place: the house is tastefully decorated (they have a fabulous collection of antiques and their taste is impecable): the rooms are exceptionally comfortable with a fantastic shower. We had the warmest welcome (along with our 10 months Vizsla puppy). The breakfast was fantastic and we even had to ask for the recipes of home made preserves. We cannot wait to be back. Thank you.

A great find with wonderful hospitality and beautiful location. Needed somewhere to stop on the way down to SW France. This was ideally placed around 4.5 hours from Cherbourg, but importantly so much more than a standard roadside hotel. Centrally located in Saintes, but with a walled garden with views of cathedral where both dinner and breakfast was served. We did pay for the dinner but good value and much easier than going out. It was lovely to meet the family and be welcomed into their home. thank you for giving us a great start to our holiday!!

There is a wonderfully warm welcome awaiting you ! We had a gorgeous time and would go back in a heartbeat. We had dinner both evenings and were delighted with what we had, also we ate with our hosts and had fascinating conversations with fellow foodies !
