The Experience
The owners have excellent taste so you’ll find a pleasing mixture of antique, modern and mid-century furniture along with a few surprises. You get the run of a sitting room and breakfast room so on rainy days you can pull a chair up to the open fire, play a game of cards or read a book and feel very much at home. Bedrooms are all on the first floor and named after female designers from the 20th century; bathrooms are special.
Breakfast can be eaten around one big table or on your own if you prefer, and out in the garden on fine days. Bread and croissants are from the boulangerie, cakes and waffles are homemade and you can tuck into eggs and bacon, sometimes smoked salmon or trout. Wander the pretty garden, admire pots and palm trees, take a dip in the heated pool in summer.
A short walk will take you to the centre, the port and good restaurants. Hire bikes and cycle to the beach in an hour along proper paths.

- Discover the monuments and sights of Rochefort, in particular the Corderie Royale, known as the "Versailles of the sea", and the Colbert square which is famous for the musical Les Demoiselles de Rochefort with Catherine Deneuve.
- Rochefort is a beautiful city ideally located in Charente-Maritime to allow you to stay several days and visit La Rochelle, Royan, Saintes and Cognac as well as the islands of Ré and Oléron, all 30 to 45 minutes away.
- Pascal will take you out for a ride in the Austin Healey 3000 along the coast on the back roads, to take in the stunning views of the famous Fort Boyard and the islands of Aix, Ré, Oléron and Madame.
- You can hire bicycles or electric bikes from L'Esprit du 8 to go to the sea at Fouras-les-Bains or to the Île Madame along the Charente river, passing through the bird sanctuaries around our guest house.

Introducing
Pascal & Sandrine Gravier
Sandrine and Pascal used to run a B&B in Normandy so they are experienced hosts. They first visited this wonderful building in 2012, bought it in 2017 and after much renovating and decorating they opened their doors to guests in 2019. They have filled the house with their beautiful collection of Art Deco, industrial and vintage pieces and look after you with fuss-free aplomb.
L'Esprit du 8 is a truly beautiful B&B in the centre of Rochefort oozing charm and good taste. This wonderful old sous-préfecture has been very tastefully renovated by Sandrine and Pascal, the owners, in keeping with the building's original features whilst adding their own exquisite touch and collection of Art Deco/vintage/industrial finds.
