The Experience
The elegant house rises smartly from the fringes of Aulnay, one of the Charente-Maritime’s loveliest towns; over the years it’s been a distillery, girls’ school and the local lido. Enter to a large hallway, a baby grand piano and rooms of sophisticated style with Eastern treasures dotted here and there. Everything is measured, nothing over the top.
You could gather the whole clan here to celebrate a special birthday or anniversary; there are a few houses around but it feels very private. You might not feel the pull to leave, with a pool, boules and jungle gym for sunny days and a big kitchen, cinema room and gym when the weather turns.
Fire up the barbecue and dine under the stars. You’re rural but there’s plenty nearby: caves, cognac distilleries, the cobbled streets of Saint-Jean-d’Angély. Borrow the bikes to get you there.

I was lucky enough to visit this beautiful property and have a good look round. The owners have put much thought into its restoration, its stunning interior, comfort and amenities both inside and outside will make this a great place for your holiday. Walking distance to restaurants and ideally located for exploring this area of France.

Location
The neighbourhood
The treasures of the Charente-Maritime are conveniently close, but everything you need is right here in Aulnay: boulangeries for your morning pastries, a twice-weekly market for fresh fare and a big Intermarché on the outskirts of town. It’s a 10-minute walk into the centre of town to restaurants (two traditional bistros) and the Thursday night fish and chips van. There are a handful of smart houses near the property, but from the front enjoy rolling views across the tranquil countryside.
Local points of interest from Lisa & Stuart Bunce
- Market square: Aulnay has a quaint market square with multiple cafes/bars and bakeries perfect to grab a drink and watch the world go by. On Thursday and Sunday mornings there is a market at the square.
- Cognac is only 40 mins drive away, a lovely town famous for its brandy.
- Saintes is also only 40 mins drive from the Chateau, offering different dining options and bars, based on the banks of the Charente river it makes for a great walk on a fine day.
- The coastal town of La Rochelle is just over an hour away, offering a lovely harbour with many different genres of restaurants. There is also lots of shops to look around along with the La Rochelle aquarium being popular for families with children.
- Both Il de Re and Il d'Oleron are approx. 2 hours away from the Chateau. A full day can be spent riding bikes and visiting the sandy beaches the islands have to offer.

Introducing
Lisa & Stuart Bunce
You’ll look after yourself, though owners Lisa and Stuart are close by should you need a hand. The family spent five years painstakingly restoring the château to an amazing standard. You’ll see many pieces from their travels around the place; they have a real flair for interiors.
We had a family reunion from Australia and England, meeting as a family in France. The host and and staff of the chateau and the pub over the road was very friendly and took care of our every need. We had lots of family who came from Australia and everyone enjoyed their stay. Highly recommend a stay at Chateau de minargant, will definately be back.
