The Experience

The setting is sublime, on the edge of a forest and with sweeping views over the gardens. Walk straight in to a large, open-plan living space with a merry wood-burning stove, plenty of comfy seating and a dining table. There’s an extra sitting room upstairs with TV, games, sketch pads and board games – plenty to enjoy on rainy days. Wide counters and a butcher’s block in the kitchen provide ample prep space and you’ll find all you need to cook up a storm.

Bedrooms, one on the first floor, two on the second, can all be jigged around as twins or doubles and there are sofa beds for extra bods. All have nice views, either over the gardens and château or over the forest. Bed linen is Georg Jensen damask and there are Molton Brown soaps and lotions in the shower room.

A large lawn is perfect for sprawling, energetic games or picnics, and the forest is magical to explore with its majestic trees and hundreds of birds. It’s peaceful here.

Reviews

There's nothing I'd like more than to suggest to my adult kids that we spend a week at Maison Ines – relaxing, cooking (and eating!) and taking exercise in the surrounding countryside.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're just 1km from Bagnoles de l'Orne which has a fabulous covered market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings – buy the freshest fruit and vegetables as well as meat, fish and local specialities like honey, cider and perry. Kayak or paddle on the lake; find good places to eat, cafés for people-watching and a train station connecting to Argentan and Flers and thence to Paris or Grenville.

Local points of interest from Soren Rasmussen & Klaus Bentin

  • LE MONT-SAINT-MICHEL an impressive monastery that seems to float between the sea and the sky. Please be aware that it is one off France's largest tourist attraction, and high-season visitation can be substantial.
  • D-DAY beaches carries the legacy of D-Day, with the entire region rich in memorials and war museums. It was here that the Allied forces landed during World War II in the invasion known as D-Day to give us our freedom.
  • BAYEUX TAPESTRY is a unique attraction in the town of Bayeux, telling the story of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and William the Conqueror's conquest of England. The 70-meter-long embroidered tapestry is a vivid narrative and a rare cultural treasure.
  • GOLF OF BAGNOLES DE L'ORNE Across from Chateau du Gue aux Biches you'll find the Golf of Bagnoles de l'Orne. If golf interests you, you can either rent equipment on-site or bring your own clubs.
  • Bagnoles-de-l'Orne just 1,5 km from the chateau is a charming town located in Normandy, renowned for its thermal baths and wellness facilities. The town has a long history as a popular spa destination and is an idyllic place for visitors to relax.
  • French Cuisine. Go to the markets and the local farms so you can cook dinner at Maison Ines with a local chef. The chef comes to you and agrees what you want to eat, you shop together and prepare dinner together and enjoy French Cuisine.

Introducing

Soren Rasmussen & Klaus Bentin

Klaus and Soren left Denmark in search of a château, and in 2017 they found this lovely old place in a sorry state of disrepair and set about bringing it back to life before opening to guests in 2021. Your multi-lingual hosts speak English, German, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and French.
