The Experience
Set off for the Landing Beaches with a hamper. David and Alyson create generous picnics of homemade scotch eggs and pumpkin pasties, classic French charcuterie and chocolate mousse.
Big bedrooms with views lie upstairs and down…this 1800s farmhouse has had an immaculate makeover. Who’d guess it had been occupied by troops in WW2 and that the barn had been a hospital? Now there’s chess in the lounge, logs in the burner, and books in every corner. All feels fresh, light and inviting.
Visit the shops and coffee bars of quaint Sainte-Mère-Église and the unspoilt beaches of the Cotentin Peninsula. From yachtie Saint-Vaast (30km), take the amphibious bus to Tatihou, the breezy isle of giant gulls. Return to sociable table d’hôtes and gorgeous French food: David has a passion for cooking.

We were delighted with the welcome given by Alyson and our room was a charming pink toile-papered, four-postered delight. The ensuite was large with a huge claw-footed bath. But the best bit was the meals prepared for us each evening by Alisons husband, a former chef - 4 courses at 5* quality. A small carafe of wine/cider was included. It would be nice if there were a sofa to sit comfortably in front of the fire but the room was only set up for eating dinner & breakfast. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the owners were very helpful with their information about local sights.

We stayed here for six days. It is a haven of good food and lovely company. The facilities are excellent, historically fascinating and the owners have created a special place where one can feel completely at home. We hope to return.

We stayed for two most pleasant nights in Normandy last month. Dave and Alyson Asquith have clearly put a huge effort into The Old Farm and created a lovely place. What we also found was the trouble they had taken over numerous small details and their personal warm welcome; nothing was too much trouble. We also experienced two cracking good multi-course dinners which were imaginative, excellent and at the price amazing value!

The neighbourhood
On the edge of tiny Amfreville, the landscape is deeply rural. This is the area of the D-Day landings - 6 June 1944. American parachutists were dropped all around, including Sainte-Mère-Église (5km); the village's story is most interesting. Of the landing beaches, Utah’s is the closest, and the house is 20 minutes from the Landing Museum. If you love good food and visiting markets, David offers four-day cookery classes.
Local points of interest from David Asquith
- Quaint Sainte-Mère-Eglise became involved in one of the greatest exploits in military history in the night of 5 to 6 June 1944, as D-Day began. American parachutists were being dropped all around the area, and in the village itself.
- Utah beach museum is a must see attraction with historical DDay sites of Brecourt manor, Angoville au Plain, Carentan and Sainte Come du Mont, home of the DDay Experience attraction at Dead man’s corner all within easy reach of Utah Beach
- Omaha Beach is one of the 2 American landing areas in Normandy. 5.9 kilometers long, this beach is 12 km east of Utah Beach. Today, the beach is dotted with the remains of German bunkers. The Musée Mémorial d’Omaha Beach, also documents the invasion
- A visit to the Bayeux is the highlight for most tourists to Normandy. Bayeux’s tapestry dominates notions of the place, but as you arrive here, it’s the splendid cathedral that dominates the scene and signals that you’re entering a glorious historic city.
- The Mont-Saint-Michel counts among France’s most stunning and most visited sights. For centuries one of Europe’s major pilgrimage destinations, this holy mount is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as is its breathtaking bay.
- The village of Barfleur has a long and impressive history and is proud to be listed among the “most beautiful villages of France”. Until now it is the only village in the Manche department having obtained this label, Famous for its wild mussels.

Introducing
David Asquith
After six years steeped in house renovation, Alyson (once a nurse) and David (former military chef) push the boat out to welcome you. Alyson’s interest is interior design, and David’s is local history; he also runs French cookery classes. Generous, easy-going hosts, they are perfectionists in all they do. Alyson’s mother lives in the cottage across the drive, and one son shares the house.
We spent a wonderful couple of nights at this delightful old farmhouse. We were warmly welcomed by Alyson and David and shown into the lovely garden room with access to their garden and then enjoyed a complimentary bottle of local cider. After visiting the D day beaches, the Bayeux tapestry and many other interesting sites we returned to some delicious meals prepared by David, definitely a talented chef. Both Alyson and David were able to provide interesting information about the Normandy area. Well worth a visit and would love to think we might return some day.
