The Experience

A sheltered, bountiful setting for these two old stone buildings on either side of a large terrace. Interiors are graceful, simple, extremely comfortable: a large sitting room in the main house and an equally spacious one in the Tower mean you can all gather together, or some can slip off for a bit of peace – just the ticket for mixed age groups.

The kitchen, modern and roomy, has all the gear you need to cook for ten and you can eat by the riverside, on the shaded kitchen terrace, on the sun terrace or in the family sitting room. A food delivery service can be arranged (including your breakfast croissants) if you need a break. All bedrooms have stunning views across the lush gardens.

Laze in the walled pool, play tennis, croquet or ping pong, wander the gardens to find red squirrels and woodpeckers. Light the fire pit on the river bank while more adventurous souls launch themselves or a canoe into the calm waters flowing past.

Absolutely magical stay at La moulin sur cele. An idyllic setting made for total escapism. Deirdre and Marc were amazing hosts nothing was too much trouble. The villa itself is 5 star rating. Everything was perfect down to beautiful linen and comfortable beds. Have already booked for next year loved this place.

From the homely charm of the interior to the beautifully maintained grounds; from relaxing by the babbling river to competing in an exciting game of tennis; from lazing by the glistening pool by day to gazing at the twinkling stars by night, our stay was a truly wonderful experience. Le Moulin offered something special to every member of our family and has given us many amazing memories to keep us going through the long winter nights ahead. It was beyond idyllic!

Location

The neighbourhood

This area is known as La Vallée du Paradis - it has some of the most beautiful countryside in Europe, so walks (you'll find a superb guide to marked routes in the house), cycles and swims are sublime. Brengues is 6kms and Marcilhac-sur-Célé is 4kms. Both have restaurants and small shops. Cajarc, a 15-minute drive has a good market every Saturday afternoon. Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is a 45-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Deirdre McGlone

The Benedictine Abbey St Pierre in Marcilhac boasts the oldest Gothic archway in France. This 'Monument Village' is also surrounded by numerous Dolmens, and a beautiful Menhir in Belinac. The Gite is situated in a 'black triangle' - ideal for star-gazing.
Rocamadour is one of the Midi-Pyrenees' main attractions. This city in the sky is built from the very mountain against which it is perched. The site of pilgrimages since the 12th Century, Rocamadour still amazes all who visit.
St. Cirq Lapopie, the Grottes de Pech Merle, Cahors and the winelands, Figeac, Gouffre de Padirac, Cuzals, Cajarc, Gramat, Carennac, Autoire, Conques, Laguiole, Albi, Cordes, Sarlat, Moissac, Brive and the Aveyron Gorge are all within a day's outing.
There is excellent walking, varying from Grandes Randonnees forming part of the ancient pilgrim route to Santiago de Campostella, to smaller tracks and footpaths. Cycling offers another way to explore. Bicycles can be hired inexpensively in Marcilhac.

Deirdre McGlone

Deirdre (from Donegal) and Marc (born in Switzerland) ran a hotel in Ireland for 30 years. They achieved their dream of moving to France with their three children in 2020. They had always loved the French way of life, rooted in simple, timeless pleasures - the fabulous food, the fine wine, the countryside and the culture. They live in another part of the estate so are there if you need them.
