The Experience

The feel is very rural and peaceful but you’re only a short walk from a small village with a dolmen walk (lovers of history will be in their element) and the entrance to La grotte de Foissac – a huge network of caves, much of it undiscovered, which runs under the château. You sleep in grand, comfortable bedrooms in the main house: large, light and airy, one of them a bridal suite when there are weddings and all with lovely views.

Breakfast is served either at the big wooden table in the dining room or on the terrace – help yourselves to fresh pastries, fruit, muesli, yogurts and jams. All bedrooms have their own seating area for a quiet read but there’s also a lovely drawing room with board games and WiFi. Take a stroll around the walled garden filled with fruit trees, borrow a bike to explore or simply snooze in a hammock or splash in the pool.

Sometimes you are offered dinner – usually on Sunday or Monday nights.

Location

The neighbourhood

Villeneuve, 7kms, has the nearest restaurants plus a bakery and a Sunday morning market. Most of the nearby towns have outdoor markets and, in summer, the villages take turns to host brocantes/boot sales. Head to Sainte-Croix (9kms) for live music on summer weekends. Figeac is 15kms for the Egyptian Champollion Museum and lovely restaurants and cafés. The nearest station is at Salles-Courbatiès.

Local points of interest from Julia Fulford-Kirby

  • Just 1 km from Mas de Pradie is the astonishing Grotte de Foissac, an absolute must see while you are here .These historical caves show the story of human habitation going back over 20,000 years.
  • Grand Figeac, is one of my personal favourite towns in France, just a 20 minutes drive from Mas de Pradie, Figeac is a medieval town situated on the Cele river. Home to the Musee Champollion, this town is full of great shops, restaurants and great markets.
  • Cajac, sits on the bank of The Lot river and surrounded by cliffs makes it an impressive landscape. This old town is considered one of the most beautiful in France and offers shops and restaurants plus markets and kayak and boats hire on the river.
  • Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, is a cliff top medieval town that sits above The Lot river, a beautiful historic town to visit also offers boat trips along the river, swimming areas and beautiful walks under the cliffs.
  • Château & Jardin de Bournazel, this remarkable restoration of a Renaissance château and garden is a true treasure of our region.
  • Najac, a medieval château fort sits high upon a hill encircled by the majestic Aveyron river. This a truly a magical other worldly place.
