The Experience
Lanky, relaxed philosopher Bruno has turned his family château into a delightful, harmonious refuge for the world-weary traveller. The cosy, book-lined, deep-chaired sitting room is a place where you find yourself irresistibly drawn into long conversations about music, yoga, art… The sunny breakfast room is charming with its stone-coloured tiles and pretty fabrics – linger over fresh croissants from the local bakery, jams, cheeses and fresh fruit.
Generations of sliding children have polished the banisters on the stairs leading to the large, light bedrooms that are beautifully but unfussily decorated – splendid brass bedsteads, Turkish rugs on parquet floors, old family furniture, pictures and memorabilia – the spirit of zen can be felt in the search for pure authenticity.
You’re surrounded by hectares of groomed grounds in this peaceful setting. Hard to imagine that you’re only 15 minutes from the centre of Tours.

Location
The neighbourhood
In the middle of the green valleys on the outskirts of Tours, this fine house was built in the 1800s upon the foundations of a much older, 16th-century building. The owners like to suggest you visit quieter, sometimes more interesting houses like Château de L'Islette (15 mins), open to visitors and which has a concert season. Gizeux, 35 mins, is family-owned and does guided tours.

Introducing
Bruno Clément
The house has been in the family for five generations - Bruno does the decoration himself, including wonderful panelling, and Cecile worked in finance around the world living abroad (China, UK, Russia, Argentina.) The children no longer live at home but they return often and the house is very much a village - an estate where family members live in different buildings. The cousins next door make foie gras.
The Clement family are proud to be the 5th generation to care for their grand old family home. They welcome you with grace and charm and love to point guests in the right direction for things to do, be it something interesting happening to see at one of the local chateaux, or a wonderful new restaurant they've discovered. The feeling here is grand but very laid-back too.
