The Experience

Sleep in an antique canopy bed in a soaring-ceilinged room where Louis XIV (aka the Sun King) is said to have stayed. Each of the château’s five bedrooms are huge, with flagstone floors and enormous windows that look out over the vast courtyard and acres of parkland as far as the eye can see. Bathrooms are modern and mostly en suite (only the Chancellor’s and Musketeers’ Chambers have bathrooms across the corridor).

Breakfasts are fit for a king (homemade Viennese pastries, warm baguettes, freshly squeezed juices and bright fruit salads, jams, honey and home made compotes) and candle-lit dinners in the glittering dining room are a gourmet affair, prepared by resident chef Carole who serves up a “surprise menu” with locally sourced and seasonal produce.

The 350-acre estate is yours to explore – try your hand at fly fishing, play a game of tennis, go for a boat ride on the lake, or wander through the impressive formal gardens.

Reviews

It would be a magical experience to call this architectural gem home for a few nights. Even the most seasoned château-goer cannot be unmoved by the vision of such a beautiful ensemble of buildings. The bedrooms are also a joy to behold and the owner bubbly and delightful. The food is a highlight, and the in-house chef ensures that the dinners are as memorable as the château.

Location

The neighbourhood

You could spend days just wandering around the property, along the river Eure and into the forest. Heading out, Chartres (30 mins) and its twin-spired cathedral are a must-visit – as is the famous labyrinth. Nearby, the Château de Maintenon (40 mins), once home to Louis XIV’s mistress, is spectacular. For antique lovers, the markets and shops of La Perche are a happy hunting ground.

Introducing

Alice de Parseval & Edouard de Vitry

Few places can offer such an incredible sense of history and it’s all thanks to the dedication of owner, decorator and artist Alice and her husband who have spent years restoring this glorious 17th-century property. She's a fantastic host, and Edouard will happily show you around the house to discuss the ongoing renovations to the château and grounds, which had been neglected for centuries.
