The Experience

This Napoleonic mansion feels friendly despite its imposing columns and ornate ceilings – Pierre will introduce you to his horses while Marie whips up rum cocktails and Creole samosas from her native Réunion.Big, airy bedrooms have oak floors and garden views across the 51 acres of wildflower-speckled meadows. Marie’s 12 varieties of hens provide eggs for breakfast – served in the dining room under a Murano glass chandelier or out on the terrace when the weather’s fine. You can chat or read in the sitting room or whack a ball about on the tennis courts. Hop on the motorway to visit pretty, half-timbered Bourges or tour markets – both flea and food – in Saint-Amand-Montrond. Spend a day leisurely gliding the canals in an electric boat; dip a toe in the bassin on your return should you be inspired to swim.

Reviews

Our stay with Marie and Bernard was excellent, they welcomed us into their beautiful chateau and we shared a delicious dinner in the glorious dining room. Marie is a wonderful cook and I thoroughly recommend this chateau. The setting is perfect and facilities very comfortable.

everything we've come to expect from a Sawday's listing... a perfect location... excellent facilities and food... splendid hospitality... we could not have asked for more... great value... we shall certainly return...

Michael, Cheltenham

A very comfortable and spacious room in a delightful home. Bernard and Marie are the most welcoming of hosts and the evening meal was sumptuous. Breakfast was equally tasty and the eggs fresh from Marie's hens. The gardens are serene and a dip in the lake is a must. We cannot recommend the Chateau highly enough. Most certainly worth a visit.

Wonderful stay. Welcoming hosts with good English. Beautiful house with lovely furniture and artworks and very comfortable. Food was great and the wine flowed. The grounds were lovely to walk around. A great stay on your way down south.

The welcome here, the warmth of Bernard and Marie and the quality of everything was exceptional. The room (Hibiscus) was light, bright and spacious, the bed very comfortable. But the highlight was the hospitality, we enjoyed an evening meal outside with Bernard and Marie, plus two other guests staying. It was truly delicious, all homemade, including the punch and idyllic as the sun went down. Similarly, in the morning, breakfast was all fresh, homemade and lovely. These two really are good hosts , friendly, attentive and caring. (Thank you.) We will be back soon.

Hidden Treasure. Here you feel like the house guests of the Count and Countess in the tasteful and cultured surroundings of their historic Château situated in extensive parkland. Ideally located for us at the mid point of our frequent journeys from Spain to England it is an oasis in which to rest and refresh, the proximity of the autoroute only evidenced by distant headlights on the horizon. The spacious rooms are impeccable with all you need and for breakfast you can have whatever you want. The Château de Preuil is a blissfully peaceful haven to share with like minded souls. No discos here!

The chateau was exquisite, set in beautiful grounds and the hosts could not have been more attentive and welcoming. My room was large and elegant with a smart modern bathroom. It was a lovely stay.

We have stopped at the Chateau twice now en route to the South of France. It is a lovely place, set in beautiful countryside, but close to the main motorway South. Marie and Pierre are absolutely charming and serve delicious meals using fresh local produce and home made preserves. This is our go to place in this part of France when travelling through. Highly recommend it.

Norman, Poole

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful house! Our hosts were exceptional and when we arrived in a deluge greeted us with an umbrella. Throw s we’re comfortable and clean and the house and gardens very pretty and typically French! We had dinner reserved for us in a local restaurant which was very good indeed. The next morning we a fabulous breakfast with home made yoghurts and jams and freshly collected eggs. Would definitely go back and recommend this very highly

Location

The neighbourhood

On a remote hilltop, farmland spills out around the château, dotted with small copses. Quiet lanes lead here, wending through rustic stone villages and leisurely waterways. Vallenay (two kilometres) is the nearest village, with a bakery and a simple country bar in pale, squat stone buildings – Saint-Amand-Montrond (11 kilometres) has shops and restaurants and Noirlac, on the way, an attractive abbey and traditional auberge. It’s just 15 minutes’ drive from the A71 motorway, so perfect for a stop off when heading north or southwest.

Local points of interest from Pierre & Marie Ducas

  • The park surrounding the chateau was built in 1846 by the romantic Count of Choulot landscaper who adapted some of the English landscape architect Capability Brown’s ideas. Beautiful shaded paths made for strolling.
  • 12 horses and ponies are hosted in the property and you can head to the fields and get to know them. Some are old and retired but still in good shape.
  • Our region is the Berry which is one of the oldest province of France. It has a discreet charm including themes such as Romanesque architecture, ancient villages, gardens, forests.
  • Nearby we recommend: The Abbey of Noirlac, one of the best preserved Cistercian abbeys in Europe. The feudal castles of Meillant and Ainay-le-Vieil.The Romanesque churches of Orval, Celle, Nozières, Ineuil...
  • You can also discover the gardens of Drulon and the Priory of Orsan. You will be able to enjoy the forest of Tronçais, one of the oldest and biggest forest of oaks of Europe. The old and new parquets of our house come from it. .
  • The old town of Bourges, its cathedral, the Palis Jacques Coeur and its pedestrian streets lined with old houses, it's perfect to visit.

Introducing

Pierre & Marie Ducas

The Ducas’ have been welcoming guests – plus assorted horses – since 2015. Ask Marie about life in her native Réunion; you’ll spot her love for her homeland around the house and in her tasty Creole cooking. Husband Pierre was an engineer and has escaped office life for a more leisurely pace in the country. They live onsite with their two dogs.
