The Experience

The winding, flower-scented streets of Mèze lie midway between medieval Montpellier and sandy Mediterranean beaches at Sète and Marseillan. This former fisherman’s house stands three storeys high on the old town’s ramparts, overlooking the sparkling Étang de Thau with its oyster beds – artists flock to paint them.

Climb the steep stairs to the top, where an open-plan living/dining area and a modern kitchen gleam in the light from a big window overlooking the water. Crack open the wine and nibbles, then head down a floor to the intimate bedroom – flowing white curtains, cotton sheets and wooden floorboards.

The adjoining salon, tiny but perfectly formed, has French windows opening out to a view-filled balcony. It’s all deliciously intimate, from the narrow stairs to the tiny shower room, but there’s room for six at the dining table.

Reviews

I'd love to spend a weekend in this comfy gem of an old fisherman's house, deep in among the twisty streets of Mèze. The steep steep climb to the top floor is worth every puff simply for the stunning view over the glittering lagoon and its architectural oyster beds. You can walk to everything from here : myriad restaurants, beaches, harbour (boat trips on the lagoon, water jousts in summer...).

We had a wonderful stay in the charming little house, and will very certainly come back for another holiday. I already recommended Maison de Thau to friends.

We visited for a short break in September 2016 & returned in June 2017. The description of the accommodation is very accurate tasteful, intimate & beautifully light. Meze is delightful with a market and excellent inexpensive restaurants. Swimming in the lagoon about 5 min walk. We had a car, but may not bother with one next time. A very happy holiday,.

Location

The neighbourhood

The quiet road is steps away from the bustle of Mèze's covered market, and from the fishing boats that bring your dinner to the seafood restaurants lining the lagoon. You can walk to two little beaches nearby for swimming, sunbathing and pootling, then on to a choice of restaurants and the pretty harbour with yet more places to eat.

Local points of interest from Tamsin Mackinnon

  • Meze has 2 lovely sandy beaches. As meze sits on the lagoon the waters are calm and warmer than the nearby Med, perfect for a good swim or a paddle. Cool off and have drink at the beach bar, take in the panoramic view looking over the lake towards Sete.
  • The jewel in Meze’s crown is surely its beautiful port. The little harbour is lined with restaurants offering freshly sourced seafood perfect for a balmy evening of alfresco dining.
  • For the wine lovers out there, Meze provides the ideal base for an afternoon of vineyard touring. From the historic Abbey de Valmagne to quirky local producers, just ensure you have a designated driver!
  • Never forget that the beautiful Mediterraean sea lies just beyond L’Etang de Thau. You can see the horizon from the kitchen window!
  • The Med is definitely cooler than the lake in Meze but nothing says the south of France more than a dip in the cool blue water and then chilling for lunch in one of the many pop up beach clubs that line this special uncrowded piece of paradise.
  • Further afield why not visit medieval Pezenas? A gentle drive through vineyard country, Moliere is famed to have lived here once but for now why not get lost wandering around its pretty streets or visit its many brocantes on the main road?
