The Experience
It’s a long way up Sète’s emblematic Mont St Clair but the car will climb for you and the rewards are huge: long luminous views over the boats and oyster beds and, with the pines at your back, the ever-refreshing sea breeze. You’ll see why, 100 years ago, fishermen built summer retreats here above the steamy town. In the terraced garden, choose between a book in the pine-shaded hammock, a card game on the back terrace, a quiet deck chair off to the left, dinner for all at the front. On three semi-levels and perfect for two couples or a small family, the cool airy house has its old terracotta floors, high ceilings, and big windows for lots of light, modern kitchen gadgets in delightful 1950s dress and uncluttered bedrooms, one with sea views, while the neat bathroom extension ends in a stunning shower-with-a-view. The charming owners’ taste is impeccably their own, the place has personality and interesting art as well as peace and quiet. Canal-chequered Sète is a treasure-trove: a pretty harbour and great fish market, memories of Brassens the poet-singer, a fine museum, excellent theatre and music, boats for hire…

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at La Maison du Pecheur. The house was immaculate and the kitchen was very well equipped (including a nespresso machine!) We didn't have a car but it was easy to walk down to the bus stop 10 minutes away and the supermarket was also a few minutes away by foot. It was really relaxing to spend the mornings and evenings out on the terrace. The air conditioning was very welcome during the heatwave! The house is well positioned for enjoying the town as well as the beautiful beaches. Lydia is an extremely helpful and friendly host.

We had a lovely stay at La Maison du Pecheur despite an initial rainy week. We found lots to do in the area - delectable oysters, a walk in the local forest, markets and visits to local towns and the beach. The rain meant that we could slow down and read and gaze at the lovely view. The house is comfortable and easy to be in in inclement weather. The only downside was that when there was sunshine we didn't get any on the lovely terrace, possibly because the house is north facing and the sun was lower in the sky? Lydia was a helpful attentive host who sorted out issues if they arose, promptly.

Absolutely amazing house on top of Sète! Very clean, peaceful, and private. 30 min walk to downtown or the beach or 5 min by car. Lots of great restaurants on the beach or in town. Definitely a place to get away from it all near some of the best beaches in Europe. Lydia was so helpful and made our trip even better! We had a wonderful week here and hope to come back soon!
