The Experience

It’s beautiful here, near a small mountain town, by a stream tumbling between oak trees. Sebastien knows every corner of the unspoilt landscape he grew up in and can guide you to the best spots for everything from climbing to trout fishing.

Come as a couple or as a group – there’s an off-road cycle path, space galore for children to explore, a great pool, ping-pong and boules. You can cook local food on the big stone barbecue and eat out in the courtyard. Or have Sandrine rustle you up an indoor feast around the ancient olive millstone.

The family-owned château and its cluster of old buildings have a wonderfully peaceful feel as the sun sets – you may climb the 11th-century tower for the last rays, or be walking back from a local restaurant, or simply sipping a decent Languedoc on your terrace.

Reviews

Our gite in the chateau was very well appointed and equipped and comfortable. Morning views of the mountains and old castle were tremendous. Scale the heights behind (20 minute drive up to the plateau to do the circuit or out the backdoor) There are lovely places to swim in the nearby Gorges (go to the pay car park) and from small uncrowded beaches by the bridges in the river if you drive briefly West then turn S for Rochebrun. Cave visits close by. Pool is great and good size. Owners discreet friendly. Do book their cooking!

We had a wonderful stay this year in Chateau de Colombières-sur-Orb. In a rustic setting with amazing views of surrounding hills it has a lovely swimming pool, a table tennis table, a shared bbq and even a donkey and a horse on site for the children to pet! Our gite was well equipped, comfortable, and only a short drive away from pretty villages, a couple of good restaurants, canoeing on the river Orb and the local supermarket. Sebastian is charming, laid back and very helpful, and we met some lovely other guests. We’ll definitely go back, hopefully before too long!

We absolutely loved our stay here. It was exactly what we hoped for. Thank you, Sebastien. Because the weather was hot we spent most of our time playing in the pool. We loved the setting - completely surrounded by wooded hills, and found it very relaxing. The house was spacious and cool. We came by bus and enjoyed walking through the village to buy food. There are plenty of walks nearby - the Gorges de Colombieres with its lovely pools for swimming and a fabulous 5 hr walk up into the hills, and up to the tower through the woods. Canoeing and climbing also on the doorstep. We'll be back!

The Chateau is beautiful, the views spectacular and the gites well laid out.We were lucky enough to find this chateau for our wedding weekend and reception. The hosts were very friendly and knowledgeable, Sebastian looks after the maintenance of the pool, grounds and the 5 gites to keep them all in tip top condition. His partner Sandrine looks after the day to day running of the accommodation and produced an excellent reception buffet that had all our guests (English and French) completely bowled over. Everything we wanted and more!

Peter, Gravesend

I would stay here for the pure delight of the area. Unspoilt mountains scenery & gorges. Good restaurants abound, & there is so much you can do from here. Long walks, bike rides along the voie verte, & for the sportif, climb or go canoeing! The gites are very comfortable, well thought out and not cluttered. Just the odd piece of fine old French country furniture that gives a touch of history or character. I love the fact that it is possible to eat "out" but at the chateau, so no problem driving home after a few glasses of good Languedoc wine.

Location

The neighbourhood

This part of the Languedoc National Park is especially good for rock climbing, canoeing and hiking, and a Voie Verte cycle path, along an old railway line, runs through the village – so do buses to Montpellier - and there are 3 good restaurants. It’s around 10 minutes’ drive to Lamalou with its fine golf course; to Mons la Trivalle for local/organic produce; and to Poujol-sur-Orb with its small shops, summer pop-up restaurant and music evenings. The nearest beaches can be reached in under an hour.

Local points of interest from Sebastien Salavin

  • Bathing in the gorges of Colombières or Héric, magnificent torrents where cascades and chasms with crystal clear waters.
  • Enjoy evening concerts with a good meal, good wines or beers in the taverns of the Orb Valley. In August, there is even a festival that attracts thousands of music lovers!!!
  • Discover the wines of the region with several AOCs, PDOs and country wines. From a great diversity of soils comes an infinity of wines. Faugères and Saint Chinian are the best known but also coasts of Thongues, Minervois, Pic Saint Loup, etc...
  • Hiking and other sports activities on Mont Caroux and Espinouse. One is rocky, Mediterranean, the other, next door enjoys more rain, you are in the heart of the central massif with large forests, lakes and rivers.
  • Visit the typical villages of the region like Colombières, Saint Martin, Olargues, Vieussan, Roquebrun and many others!
  • Enjoy the wonderful gastronomy of the are and Sandrine's regionally-inspired meals!

Introducing

Sebastien Salavin

The Martin-Salavin family have lived here for over 200 years and it was Thérèse who undertook the renovation of the château’s great barn, creating the gîtes in 2002. Local craftsmen, artists and friends were all part of the works and decoration. Her son Sebastien, a fishing expert and guide who grew up here, now takes pride in running the business with his wife Sandrine who - happily for guests - is a keen professional cook.
