The Experience
Delightfully, typically French. Having begun life as a hunting lodge before being upgraded to house a wine producer, this handsome manor is perfect now for families who relish the vieille France feel: magnificent curved stone stairway with iron bannister, fine old tiles and beams. Light pours in to high-ceilinged, uncluttered rooms – downstairs doors removed for an easy flow to the space. There’s a simple, practical kitchen, a long-tabled dining room, a piano, a friendly old rocking horse, beanbags, books, games, colourful modern light fittings. Things are family comfortable rather than overly smart. Tall-windowed, colour-washed bedrooms with garden views, share two large shower rooms and two separate loos. And there’s masses of space in the gated, walled garden too – where oleander, wisteria and lavender bloom – with its private pool, boules, barbecue, covered veranda, pointing cypress and poplar trees, and tree house! This is a great food and wine area – Uzès’ buzzing Saturday market’s a must. Do visit Roman Nimes; perhaps see bulls run in local towns, or visit them in the Camargue, a 40 minute drive away.

We stayed as a family group of 6 adults and 2 teenagers for an October half-term week in mid October. Everyone agreed that Mas de Mahystre was the most wonderful house- with lots of the owner’s personal touch and full of character, spacious and comfortable and a lovely garden and pool which we used everyday day. We loved buying local produce in the village markets and “eating in” using the dining hall or outside terrace. None of us had been to the area before. Not touristy and all the better for it as you can enjoy unspoiled villages and countryside as well as Nîmes and Montpellier.

September 2023 our family spent 2wks at Mas de Mahystre South of France. Before I talk about the wonderful house and trip I would like to give a big thank you Claire and Neil for allowing us to bring our three golden retrievers with us on holiday, I struggle to find places to rent that are beautiful and allow 3 dogs! The house and gardens are simply stunning! Equipped with all you would need for fun relaxing days and long lazy evenings. The pool (like the house) is clean and a joy! You will need a car for day trips out but there are plenty of local shops. Thoroughly recommend a stay here!

Lovely stay at this beautiful house in a stunning setting amongst the vineyards. The local wine is excellent btw! The local bull running event is not to be missed- although beware that the music goes on all night - all weekend!!! - All part of the fun. We loved our beach trips and an evening in Nimes.

We had a lovely week at Mrs de Mahystre this summer. The position of the property was fantastic; very close to beautiful and quiet villages but also easy to get to the Camargue, Pont du Gard etc. Claire was really helpful with any queries we had and pointed us in the right direction for local amenities and places to visit. We all enjoyed the house, particularly the outside seating area... A great base in a beautiful part of France.

We had a family holiday and big birthday celebration at Mas de Mahystre and couldn't have found a better location. On arrival in the late evening, the place looked stunning. The house, the pool and garden, the local area, it really was ideal, everyone enjoyed themselves, from toddlers to grandparents. We're so grateful to Claire for preparing the house for our visit and being such a delight to deal with throughout. We all said we would like to visit again one day, for now we have so many happy memories to share from our wonderful holiday.

We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful, traditional family house - perfect for 2 families holidaying together celebrating a big birthday! The pool was delightful as was the terrace - perfect for eating outside in the evenings. We saw several Hoopoes in the garden -so lovely to see. We had days out at Uzes, the Pont-du-Gard and the Plage de L’Espigette all highly recommended. All in all a really enjoyable week! Thank you very much!

This was one of the best holiday houses we have ever stayed in! The most beautiful decor in the house which was also very spacious, pool was really big as was the garden. You definitely need a car but the house was perfectly situated to explore the local area-we barely scratched the surface with things to do and could have happily stayed much longer! We were a group of two families with 5 teenagers between us and everyone had a wonderful time. The owners were so helpful and easily contactable from start to finish. We would definitely recommend and would love to go back one day.

We had the most wonderful stay for two weeks in July. Our host, Claire, was so responsive from the outset, answering all my many questions before we had even booked. And this level of communication continued throughout our stay. We loved the location - very quiet and surrounded countryside -easy to get to amazing beaches and beautiful historic towns and villages. The pool was amazing - definitely a highlight for us. And enabled us to teach our 3 year-old to swim. The house had everything you needed - fab kitchen and wonderful outside eating area. If we get the chance, we'd love to return.

We had the most wonderful family holiday based at this peaceful, elegant and roomy house, which has stunning period details throughout. The tiled floors, shutters and thick walls keep it cool even in the fiercest sunshine and the pool is blissfully refreshing. The nearby villages are beautiful and the stunning Roman cities of Nimes and Uzes are an easy drive. Pont du Gard was an extraordinary day out and trips to the sandy beaches were a delight. The owner, Claire, was extremely helpful before and throughout our trip. There was so much more we wanted to see; we shall definitely be back!

We rented with friends, totalling 4 adults and 4 kids aged 12 to 18. The house is spacious, very comfortable, and well-furnished. Outdoor areas (dining area, pool, garden) are very pleasant. The house is sufficiently secluded while close to several villages offering various amenities. Nîmes and its Roman past is very close and it is easy to spend a day or a half-day on unspoiled Mediterranean beaches. For wine amateurs, there are a number of wineries in the area. It is also easy to rent bikes and enjoy the dedicated path or the nearby hills. We had a fantastic stay and thoroughly enjoyed it.

A lovely house in a beautiful location, we had a wonderful week there in the late September sun. The house was very comfortable, well equipped and very spacious (there was ample space for the four under 4s to rampage around at will). The garden and pool is great and we enjoyed eating outside every night under the stars. Very well positioned for nearby jaunts to the charming Nimes, Sommieres and the surrounding villages, locals all incredibly friendly too and the bar in St Come is great. Had a really enjoyable day trip to the beach in the Camargue too. We would love to return one day.

We had a wonderful time at Mas de Mahystre. The week just passed too quickly. We were very busy with projects such as finding the best local baguette, sampling rosé wines on the terrasse and exploring the Roman sights of Nimes and Pont du Gard. A great family house and a fantastic location.

When you pull into the crunchy-gravel driveway, you can tell that Mas de Mahystre is everything you want from a big old house in the South of France. We rented the house with two other families and it more than accommodated three couples and our children. There is plenty of living space downstairs and the large kitchen is well equipped. We were there in April, so the pool was cold – but most of us went in anyway. And when the sun did shine we loved lying on sunloungers gazing at the back of the house and listening to birdsong.

Mas de Mahystre is a beautiful and magical house with plenty of space for all ages. It has a traditional feel with all the mod cons you could ask for. The terrace and outside eating area is wonderful and the pool and tree house a hit with adults and children! Claire, the owner is also a joy to deal with and is incredibly helpful! Enjoy your holiday!

Local points of interest from Claire Ashworth
- The lovely market town of Calvisson is a 5 minute drive away. On Sunday mornings the popular, bustling, authentic market animates the main square and surrounding streets. A real gem of a market with delicious local produce.
- The Roman city of Nimes is a beautiful 25 minute drive over the hills. The pedestrian old town is utterly charming and once you've marveled at the Roman Arena and other Roman remains, there are hundreds of delightful cafes in the squares and streets.
- The vibrant university town of Montpellier is a mere 40 minute drive away. It is an enticing melange of old and modern architecture and the old town is bursting with creativity. Great for shopping, wandering, dreaming and people watching.
- The mediterranean sea is only 35 minutes by car. We love the beaches in between La Grande Motte and Palavas. There are so many fantastic beach bars and restaurants to choose from or you can just pitch up on the soft sand with your umbrella and towel.
- Fabulous cycling and walking surrounds the house. No need to jump in the car, just head towards the vines! If you want hills, head towards the Cevennes mountains north of our house for some beautiful villages, river swimming and canoeing.
- The medieval town of Usez, the Haribo sweet museum and the Roman Pont du Gard are all very close to each other and what a perfect combination for a wonderful family day out. Something for everyone within a 45 minute drive.

Reluctant to write a review as this place is a real find! Three generations stayed for a week including children of 18 months and 3. Everything is as described. You cannot help but slow down here. The grandparents and the little ones always find that easy - but it was wonderful watching the young adults switch off too. You definitely need a car but the next village is easily walkable to pick up pastries for the morning. We visited Pont du Gard, Avignon and la Grande Motte but happily spent days at the house. Claire was great at responding to queries before, during and after our stay. Thank you,
