The Experience

It’s gorgeous here. The feel is historic, individual and authentic with some lovely architectural features like the restored Art Deco wallpaper in the salon, a signed 1871 stained glass window and the laundry room converted into an ‘Orient Express’ style bathroom. There are five large and elegant bedrooms, some with fridges, most with separate seating areas and Nespresso machines, lovely antiques and superb views.

Breakfast is organic with homemade granola and yogurt, fruit from the garden, eggs from the owners’ chickens and fresh breads, all served in the elegant dining room or outdoors. The house employs a live-in cook and delicious organic lunches and suppers can be arranged if you want. Swim surrounded by wildlife in the natural pool, walks are sublime, electric bikes can be borrowed and you can do yoga in the pretty gardens.

Take the whole place, have an intimate or large party, get married. All can be handled with ease and charm.

Reviews

What a truly unforgettable place to stay. As we drove through fields towards a copse of trees in the middle, we weren't entirely sure what to expect. La Belle Eco surpassed all of our expectations. This beautiful building has been thoughtfully restored both inside and out, with interesting finds and luxurious touches throughout. The outdoor area for guests were incredible from the wild grass sections, to the natural pool where you can dip to the chorus of frogs! The staff were the icing on the cake, with special mention to the chef who created some of the best meals we had on our trip!

Helen, Bristol

La Belle Eco is a delightful 19th-century Languedoc property surrounded by ten green acres of gardens, trees and lawns. We loved the natural bathing pond, the organic credentials and the spacious elegance of the house.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is in a tranquil, remote setting so borrow the bikes or set off on foot for wonderfully peaceful cycles and walks surrounded by inspiring countryside filled with birdsong. There's a great little restaurant on the Canal du Midi about a 10-minute drive away. Montréal with its medieval cathedral is 3km away, Bram is 4km and Ruby can point you to local producers, organic vineyards and quirky brocantes.

Local points of interest from Dimitri Augustidis

  • The small town of Montolieu, a few kilometres north-west of Carcassonne in the Languedoc region of southern France. The town is best known for the number of booksellers in the town that attract enthusiasts of old books from far afield.
  • Start your visit to Limoux in the historic centre, an attractive area around the Place de la Republique with some attractive 15th-16th century houses and other monuments. It’s a very pleasant spot to stop for lunch.
  • The historic town of Carcassonne is in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, 90 kilometres south-east of Toulouse. It is certainly one of the most interesting and impressive medieval towns in the whole of France.
  • Saissac is quite a small village between Carcassonne and Revel in the Aude department of languedoc-Rossillon and makes for a very scenic detour when you are travelling between the two.
  • Saint-Hilaire is a small town to the south of Carcassonne. A pleasant town in itself, Saint Hilaire attracts many visitors because of the presence of a jewel of romanesque architecture in the village - the Abbey of Saint-Hilaire.
  • Castelnaudary is a town in the Aude department of Languedoc-Roussillon, between Toulouse and Carcassonne. A pleasant town to explore, the most interesting part of the town for visitors centres around a large port area on the Canal du Midi called the Grand Bassin.

Introducing

Dimitri Augustidis

Ruby, whose father was the film director Barney Platts-Mills, worked in the London comedy scene and as a teacher in Spain for many years. Dimitri worked in finance and took early retirement when they bought the house in 2021. It was after a permaculture course that the true ethos of La Belle Eco began to emerge. They have three very friendly dogs and look after you beautifully along with a small staff.
