The Experience

Park in the sleepy village, pass under the arch, enter the cobbled alley… and step back a thousand years. This former ‘bread oven’ is built right into the ramparts. Its three floors are characterful and charming, and every bedroom has a view to the hills of the Corbières.

The moment you enter you unwind. Find restful bedrooms; an upcycled vintage sofa; a pretty veranda; comfortable corners to sit and plan your days out. There are French windows out to the terrace, and a heated saltwater pool and spa a 30-second stroll down the hill.

For artisan shops and ancient houses of great beauty, Lagrasse is a 10-minute drive. The rivers are where the locals swim, so rent the electric bikes and head for the gorges of the Orbieu. Beaches, medieval Carcassonne and the Regional Natural Park of the Narbonne are all within 50 minutes.

Reviews

I think that this place is special because its situation gives guests the opportunity to explore an area of outstanding natural beauty rich in history whilst staying in a comfortable gite which is part of a 11th century castle ramparts. You can take your breakfast on the outside terrace, swim and lounge by the pool all the while benefiting from the surrounding splendour of the countryside.

Location

The neighbourhood

In the foothills of the Pyrénées, the remote village of Saint-Pierre-des-Champs, reached by winding roads, awaits at the top of a hill. There's a restaurant within walking distance, but for shops, cafes, farmer's markets and more restaurants, head to beautiful Lagrasse (5km). There's also a river to bathe in and a much-visited abbey. Rivers, gorges and Cathar castles abound, and Carcassonne is a 50-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Hélène Carreaud

Introducing

Hélène Carreaud

Hélène has been renovating her section of these castle ruins for 30 years. Following a successful career in the military, she opened a B&B, and, in 2019 transformed the space into gîtes - “houses of life, furnished and decorated with my favourites, my ideas and my tastes”. She has also introduced a jacuzzi and a heated pool - open April to October.
