The Experience
Part of a small hamlet with several charming old buildings, the winery and two gîtes with colourful shutters – a calm ambience prevails through the front door of the Pigeonnier. Find a bright and open space with white walls, light stone or tiled floors, large soft-coloured sofas and armchairs, books and games, a good sound system.
Up the original stone staircase to roomy bedrooms – a double and a twin on the first floor, a dormitory with four singles on the second and a double in the tower on a mezzanine. All have grand views over the courtyard, garden and vines, with armchairs on the landings for a quiet read.
On sunny days you’ll be out in the large garden, lazing in the pool (there’s a smaller one for children too), chasing the sun or shade. In the evenings you can cook in the superb kitchen, or light the barbecue, play ping-pong or pétanque, eat on the covered patio at a big wooden table and feel lucky to be on holiday here.

Location
The neighbourhood
It's 5km to Trèbes for a Sunday morning market and plenty of restaurants. Bustling medieval Carcassonne is 10km and you can cycle along the Canal du Midi if you don't want to drive – bikes can be hired and brought to the house for you. There are lots of restaurants ranging from fine cuisine to pizza and a sumptuous Saturday morning market. You'll find galleries and contemporary art at Montolieu.
Local points of interest from Thomas Sananes
- The enchanting Cité de Carcassonne is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its château comtal, two walls and 52 towers, it floats above the Aude River, the vineyards and the town and seems to have sprung from the imagination.
- Four royal fortresses join forces on the long, arid ridge overlooking the village of Lastours. On this unique site, the history of Bronze Age man intersects with that of the Cathars, villagers, craftsmen, farmers... all seeking protection on this mountain.
- The Lac de la Cavayère and the Raymond Chésa leisure complex are close to the Cité Médiévale. You’ll find picnic areas, pedalos, inflatable water games, a waterski lift, paddleboat hire, several beach volleyball courts and a forest acrobatic park.
- The Chalet Beach in Gruissan was made famous by the film ‘37°2 le matin’ (Betty Blue). An iconic site in the Aude, the houses on stilts are a real curiosity where you can recharge your batteries. There's plenty to do here, from swimming to paddle-boarding.
- The Aude is a region renowned for its gastronomy and the richness of its terroir – it’s the land of "living well" and "eating well". On the menu: the famous Castelnaudary cassoulet, truffles and olives, chocolate, Blanquette and many other tasty products!
- You can't visit the Occitanie region without visiting the Cathar fortresses! Perched on rocky outcrops several hundred metres high in a spectacular natural setting, they are the very essence of the Cathar countryside. The experience is unforgettable!

Introducing
Thomas Sananes
Thomas fell in love with the Domaine and moved here with his wife and two boys. He spent a year studying wine before throwing himself passionately into all stages of winemaking, using beautiful clay amphores and stoneware barrels for ageing. He's also a keen photographer (you'll see some of his pictures on the walls) and motorbike rider and has an amazing sound system in his cave à vin.
I was delighted to meet Thomas, enjoy his enthusiasm over this new way of life, and of course to taste his delicious wine. The gîte is so welcoming with its shutters open to let in the the fresh clean air and the sunshine. A perfect place for a real holiday, with space and comfort for all. The house feels so friendly, I can well imagine staying happily here and enjoying long peaceful days.
