The Experience

This large house dates from the 14th century and has been added onto over the years. It stands behind imposing gates in a wooded parkland with a duck pond and an assortment of animals including goats, chickens and a donkey.

There are three spacious and comfortable bedrooms and the sitting room has books, games and tourist information. Choose what you’d like for breakfast the night before and enjoy it next to the wood-burner in the dining room or by the swimming pool. You can put something together yourself in the kitchen for dinner; in the summer you can request dinner four nights a week or order a cheese platter with local wine.

The pretty historic town of Dole is known locally as ‘petite Venise’ due to its waterways and is a five-minute drive away. There are lots of walks directly from the house and more if you drive a short distance, and you can also hire bikes and follow a route that runs for 26 miles through the Doubs valley.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is in the centre of Monnières, a small village in the Jura at the crossroads of the Burgundian and Jura vineyards. There are no shops or restaurants save for a restaurant a couple of minutes away, but Dole is only five minutes away and has plenty of options.

  • The Saline Royale d'Arc-et-Senans, an 18th-century royal saltworks, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the masterpiece of architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. Its unique architecture will leave you breathless.
  • The Besançon Citadel was built by Vauban and is a must-see! A cultural site, the Citadelle is home to three French museums, including one dedicated to preserving biodiversity. Its ramparts and bastioned towers offer superb views over the whole of the city.

Introducing

Nell Aturugiri

Nell and Clement live on the first floor of the house. Nell is half Sri Lankan and visits Asia whenever she can, and works as a director in a nursing home. Clement is French and comes from the area. He works different shifts so it works out that there is usually someone at the house at any one time.
