The Experience

An 1860 three-storey house with fine proportions, tall windows and lots of architectural features. You’ll feel right at home and if you’re not going out you’re free to use the cosy sitting room with its chintzy sofas or set up a board game in the dining room. Have a picnic here or in the sunny courtyard if you can’t be bothered to eat out, or check whether it’s possible to have delicious French cuisine (usually four courses) cooked for you.

Bedrooms are on the first floor and all are lovely spaces to spend time in, filled with interesting furniture and art, pretty fabrics, inviting beds and very attractive en suite bathrooms. Wake to a sociable breakfast at one big table – organic juice and fruit, freshly baked pastries and bread from the local bakery, tasty jams and good coffee.

You’re in the centre of Aÿ, birthplace of champagne (the house of Bollinger is 100m down the road) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Taste, tour, explore.

Reviews

I can say nothing wrong about Les Portes Bleues. Loved staying there and it felt like coming home. The house itself has so much charm and the village is nice and relaxed. A bonus that restaurants are in walking distance and no-one needed to drive. Imogen felt like family from the start. She is easy to talk to and very helpful. It's a package deal: the host, the house, the location: all 10/10. Hopefully we'll be able to return one day. In the meantime, we will definitely recommend.

Greet, Emblem, Antwerp region, Belgium

As you step through the front door, this elegant townhouse opens up into a spacious retreat of high ceilings and light-filled rooms to which Imogen and her daughter, Bathsheba, bring added warmth and smiles. Whether you're here for an indulgent champagne tour or just a relaxing break, Les Portes Bleues is a place where you'll be encouraged to feel right at home.

Location

The neighbourhood

You are parallel to the main high street where you'll find two restaurants – both need to be booked ahead. Cycling or walking along the canal is nice and flat but if you're feeling fit you can tackle some steep slopes. Épernay is a five-minute drive, Reims is 35 minutes for museums and war memorials as well as the magnificent cathedral. Ditch the car and come by train from Paris or Reims.

Local points of interest from Imogen Whitaker

  • Aÿ is a UNESCO world heritage site commonly referred to as the birthplace of Champagne.
  • The house was reputedly built for the owners of Champagne Deutz and their initials are engraved in the glass window of the door.
  • The house is a typical Agéen town house dating from 1860.
  • There are at least 33 champagne makers in Aÿ including Champagne Bollinger, Deutz, Ayala, Gatinais, Egrot.

Introducing

Imogen Whitaker

Mother and daughter team Imogen and Bathsheba are warm, friendly hosts and one or the other will be there to greet you. Imogen started her career as a bookbinder then moved on to renovating the interiors of listed buildings. She also co-created and ran a champagne house just 8km from here, so she's a mine of information about where to go in the area.
