The Experience

It’s pretty groovy here with mood lighting, designer chairs, vintage pieces and floral-print crockery. Light pours in through the loftiest windows and high ceilings make the open-plan living space feel bigger. The beautiful staircase with the original stone step at its base curves up to the bedrooms. One is larger than the other but both have the original tomette tiles on the floor, mirrored wardrobes and superb linen.

The stylish galley kitchen has literally everything, including a raclette machine and rice cooker. Serious cooks can shut the door to the sitting room and create favourite French dishes with ingredients from the market – even bake a holiday cake. The little patio gets the sun all afternoon and evening (there is a parasol) and this is a great private spot for an aperitif or supper.

It’s a two-minute walk to the centre of Auxerre and the bakery for your fresh breakfast croissants and baguettes.

Beautifully refurbished traditional home in the centre of Auxerre. It was such a treat to stay somewhere so full of character and lovingly restored with a gorgeous courtyard and a peaceful atmosphere. The beds were incredibly comfy and the kitchen and bathrooms clean and modern. It was lovely and quiet whilst also very central with all the delights of Auxerre and the river Yonne in easy walking distance. Sonia was incredibly kind and welcoming and really helpful with recommendations and advice. It was a pleasure to meet her and such a fabulous place to stay.

A perfect home from home, your own townhouse where you can play at being French. Pop to the corner bakery for morning pastries, walk to the market and whip up dinner in the well-equipped kitchen, explore Auxerre's timbered buildings and riverside cafés then return to cosy up on the sofa or enjoy a glass of local wine in the shade of your own private patio. Heavenly!

Location

The neighbourhood

The town centre is pedestrianised so it's easy to walk everywhere. Stroll to the banks of the river Yonne in 15 minutes, watch the barges and boats from a riverside restaurant, admire the timbered facades and terracotta rooftops, watch the sun set over it all. Visit Saint-Germain Abbey, hire bikes, criss-cross bridges, walk the pilgrim trail, visit vineyards – you're only 20 minutes from Chablis.

Come and discover Burgundy and Auxerre's city centre at the Maison des Pilastres! We would be delighted to share with you our passion for the region's history and heritage, which led us to buy this house, built in 1619.
A real haven of peace, you can enjoy the terrace from breakfast to aperitif, and the view of an old wine press. You can also easily discover all the wonders of Auxerre and its fascinating region (Chablis, Irancy, Vézelay, Saint-Fargeau...)
Things to do in Auxerre: Tour de l’Horloge, Cathédrale Saint-Étienne, Saint-Germain Abbey, Leblanc-Duvernoy Museum, Natural History Museum. You can walk or cycle by the river Yonne and there are 2 parks nearby, Parc de l’Arbre sec and Parc de l’Arboretum.
There’s a small market in the centre of Auxerre on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, and a larger one on Tuesday and Saturday mornings in Place de l’Arquebuse. You can also visit the Saturday morning market in Toucy, 20km away.
Recommended restaurants in Auxerre: Plan B, La Cantina, Mamma Giulia (Italian), La Maison Fort, A la Maison, L’Aspérule, La Bourgogne, La Pause Gourmande (tea room & pâtisserie), L’Hermine (crêperie).
Visit the archeological site at Escolives-Sainte-Camille, with workshops for children on Wednesday afternoons. There are also several châteaux within driving distance including Château de Saint-Fargeau, Château de Guédelon and Château d’Ancy-le-Franc.

Sonia used to work in fashion and had 13 years with Ralph Lauren. She's now freelance, still in fashion, mostly with Dior. She has travelled a lot and stayed in very nice hotels so she appreciates the finer details. She's worked a lot in the UK and the USA so is very happy to welcome English-speakers.
