The Experience

You are deep in rural Brionnais surrounded by rolling hills in all directions. Sitting on the terrace gazing at the views will be restful, or reading quietly under the mulberry arbour. You’ll sleep in serene bedrooms, one on the ground floor which is perfect for anyone with reduced mobility, all with super views through large glass windows with shutters. En suite bathrooms gleam and have separate loos.

Breakfast is served at a long, communal table: fresh breads and croissants, yogurts, fruits, locally sourced jams and honey, cheese and Parma ham. If you take the whole house and self-cater you’ll find an excellent kitchen with two ovens, two fridges and all the kit you could need.

The bright and airy sitting area with comfortable sofas and plenty of room has soaring views through enormous windows and there’s a shared barbecue for long sultry evenings watching the stars appear, perhaps with a good bottle of local wine.

Location

The neighbourhood

Walking and cycling are sublime and you can start from the door. You have one neighbour, a superb potter called Chloe Walters who has her studio here. There is a good restaurant in Poisson, about 3km (a pleasant walk) and several in Charolles (about 10km) including the Michelin-starred Doucet. You'll also find plenty of good shops for stocking up.

Local points of interest from Marty Freriksen

  • The Poste à Poisson, Les trois petits pois in Saint-Symphorien-des-Bois and Le Bistrot du quai and Frédéric Doucet’s restaurants.
  • The Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur in Paray-le-Monial and Drée Castle in Curbigny.
  • Digoine Castle in Palinges.
  • The Potager de Saint-Racho restaurant in Saint-Racho and La colline du Colombier in Iguerande.
  • Le Laboureur, manufacture of work clothing, in Digoin.
  • Several hiking routes pass by the house and The circuit of the Romanesque churches of Brionnais.

Introducing

Marty Freriksen

Marty is brilliant at what he does, making people feel very much at home. He spent many years running B&Bs and guest houses then set out to convert this former cattle barn perfectly. He's created what he knows guests want most: space, tranquillity and comfort.
