The Experience
Carefully renovated and filled with local antiques and contemporary art, this sophisticated 19th-century house is a dream setting for groups of friends. You get views over marching vines and the low-lying Mâconnais hills, a glittering pool surrounded by ancient trees, gorgeous bedrooms and smart bathrooms with deep tubs, and all within a short stroll of the centre of St Amour.
Wander down to the bistro for classic French dishes, browse the pottery and pick up a souvenir to take home and collect your morning croissants from the boulangerie. Further afield is the excellent Saturday market at Chatillon sur Chalon and Cluny’s famous abbey (both 21km) while vibrant Lyon is just over an hour by car.
Spend sun-splashed days by the pool, loll in the gracious living room, eat at the big dining table, settle in by the stone fireplace to watch a movie on the projector or read a book in the cosy snug overlooking the vines.

Location
The neighbourhood
For excellent fresh fruit and veggies nip to Grandfrais (3km) otherwise try the riverside city of Mâcon (12km) brimming with shops, restaurants and a marvellous Romanesque church. Regularly during high season and almost every Saturday there are lively markets to discover offering everything from fresh produce to antiques, clothes, books and art. Vineyard tours and tastings abound.
Local points of interest from Sally-Anne Baxter
- Edged on the pretty Burgundian village of Saint-Amour-Bellevue, where the Mâconnais meets the Beaujolais, the property (built in 1849) overlooks rolling vineyards in all directions.
- It was built by the famous champagne-producing family of Chandon, to provide grand environs from which to survey the vines, and impressive outbuildings where the wine was made and stored, the property standing in private grounds surrounded by stone walls.
- Another wine-producing family took it over a century ago, and one of its descendants married, in 1957, a future Prime Minister of France (Delacour to Balladur), holding the grand wedding reception at the property.
- The village of Saint-Amour-Bellevue, with its remarkable gastronomic delights, is within walking distance of the house (and moreover easy access from major road and rail networks), yet the property’s position is utterly peaceful and tranquil.
- Of particular gastronomic note, within walking distance; Auberge du Paradis, and Josephine a table. A 5km drive; La Table de Chaintre, L'O de Vignes, Les Platanes de Chenas, and La Courtille. Further afield; Restaurant Ema, La Robe Rouge and Aux Terrasses.
- Local vignerons of note, within walking distance; Château de la Romancière, Domaine Hamet-Spay, and Pascal Durand. A short drive; Clos des Rocs, Mee Godard, Dominique Piron, Domaine des Pierres, and Roger Lassarat.

Introducing
Sally-Anne Baxter
The 19th-century house has had many illustrious owners from wine merchants to a French first minister before Sally and Daryl bought it in 2016. The couple live in Australia but have worked closely with a local architect to restore the building to its original state before filling the interiors with exceptional antiques sourced locally and contemporary design finishes for a sophisticated ambience.
If you have a group of friends who would love to spend a week together exploring the Beaujolais region, sampling wines and restaurants this is wonderfully placed.
