The Experience

There is a Renoir-like majesty here: acres of orchard and private parkland, and a 1750s manor house with a separate wing for guests. Peter and Carolyn, charming, funny, erudite and utterly English, love this rural spot. Inside your one-storey gite, floors are tiled and walls plastered, there are pretty paintings and French antiques, and fabrics softly striped or checked. You enter from the garden side through one or other of the bedrooms. The kitchen is neat and cool with turquoise tiles, there’s a day bed to lounge on and gentle sunlight filters into the courtyard. Living next to your hosts you can share their space including the pool, providing blissful refuge from the sun. With a well-equipped artist’s studio on site, this would be a brilliant retreat for creative types, and in any season. Wander the orchard or roam beyond – there are five acres of parkland here, and markets, churches and châteaux beyond. It is cosy, pretty, and quintessentially French.

Reviews

We had a very relaxing week stay with the family with two young children and a dog. The gite was charming and had everything we needed, and with wooded grounds where we could walk the dog. Peter and Carolyn were unfortunately away for most of our week, but we were looked after by their daughter Leo, who provided us with daily vegetables from the garden. Before our visit, our hosts very kindly arranged a vets visit for our dog, which we were very grateful for. Having an interest in wildlife, I enjoyed seeing bee-eaters most days, and recording pine martens in the grounds.

Spent a very blissful seven weeks at La Gozinière and, in doing so, became Peter and Carolyn's longest ever serving guests! The gite is cosy and well equipped. The manor and grounds are simply stunning. Peter and Carolyn have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the local area and it is a great place from which to explore the region. We enjoyed our time immensely. Thank you for having us.

We had the most wonderful holiday at La Gozinière this summer. The house and setting are stunning. The gite is extremely cosy, tastefully furnished and equipped with everything we required. There is plenty to do and to explore in the grounds of the manor as well as in the area. The surrounding rolling countryside is delightful and there are lots of walks starting directly from La Gozinière. We were touched by the kindness and generosity of Peter and Carolyn. We loved our stay so much that we are already planning our next holiday at La Gozinière.

We have just returned from a wonderful stay at Manoir La Gozinière - lovely accommodation, beautiful surroundings and the warmest of welcomes from Peter and Carolyn. Their hospitality meant that we and our daughter had the most relaxing break, and were only sorry we'd hadn't booked for another week!

We would highly recommend La Goziniere. The setting is incredibly tranquil, with lovely walking and cycling in the rolling countryside. Peter and Carolyn are the perfect hosts, offering useful advice and are very welcoming - they were even kind enough to share their vegetables from the vegetable garden. The gite is comfortable and equipped with everything you'd need, the pool is in a beautiful setting with views over the fields, and the manoir itself is something to behold! We had an excellent week here, and hope to return very soon.

Jack, London

The most beautiful setting to unwind. Peter and Carolyn are the perfect hosts and go above and beyond to make sure everything is perfect. There are not enough superlatives to describe our week here. We will definitely be returning again and again.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Peter & Carolyn Bear

  • Just over 3 hours from Paris and you're lost in the depths of rural France with 5 acres of private 'parc' to relax in, write your novel, paint a landscape, all surrounded by meadows and fields. Very peaceful, very agricultural - like England 50 years ago!
  • Local antiques 'brocantes' each weekend in nearby villages - with fascinating French bric-a-brac bargains. Or Street Art City. Plus music festivals in Souvigny and Chatelroy and many nearby churches. Or just relax by the private pool
  • Wonderful country walks. Europe's largest oak forest (Foret de Troncais) is almost on our doorstep, providing your own cepes harvest in season. Off-season is perfect for walkers or painters who can use the well-lit studio in the grounds.
  • Our Department (Allier) in North Auvergne has the most chateaux in France (after the Loire and Dordogne). The famous spa town of Vichy is an hour's drive - perfect day trip with its stunning opera house and long river walk.
  • Gorgeous chateaux and gardens to visit - for example at Chateau Ainay Le Vieil and the Priory at Orsan. Every village has an 11th Century church. Souvigny abbey, Bourges and Moulins cathedrals are 'musts' as are the Museum of Costume and its Nureyev room.
  • Children adore a day out at Vulcania or the massive eco-zoo and theme park for all ages at Le Pal as well as the zipwire and velorail nearby. Plus a virtual reality dinosaur experience!
