The Experience
The drive to the village of Sare is breathtaking: winding road, red and white farmhouses, rolling hills. The hotel, which dominates Sare’s square, has been in the family for three generations; it was a salon de thé after the war (and the ‘gâteau Basque’ is still delectable). Lawned terraces are the new gardens, a lap pool is planned, and the views of La Rhune tempt you to catch the mountain train. Pass the dappled dining terrace and the little shop (Basque linen, Basque pottery, homemade jam) to enter a double-glazed haven, overseen by smiling Madame. Two salons greet you – charming furniture, overstuffed sofas, a bar full of armagnacs, flowers from the garden. Upstairs, across two floors, with fire doors encased in handsome oak, are 16 bedrooms, sumptuous and serene, the quietest facing the garden. We loved the chests of drawers topped with old jugs and basins, the impeccable beds, the hand-sewn soft furnishings. Splash out on a ‘prestige’ suite if you can: the bathrooms are magnificent. Lovely Saint-Jean-de-Luz and its harbour are 12km, the hiking is marvellous, the beaches are close.

What a find. A superb hotel in a simply beautiful village. The owners are lovely, the food delightful and the hotel is beautifully kept. The village is a delight. We stayed 3 nights. So much to do especially as keen walkers. A walk to La Rhun (1000m) is a must or at least a trip up in the heritage train. This definitely gets our vote!

As a Alistair Sawdays B&B myself and my family wanted to visit the Basque region. My elderly parents were with us and we could have not fallen better than this special Family run Hotel. The owners Laurance and Jean Baptist are very kind hosts and very attentive to details. The rooms are very pretty and clean and all I can say go and stay and enjoy!

Local points of interest from Laurence & Jean Baptiste Fagoaga
- Hôtel Arraya is located in the heart of Sare, which is one of the prettiest villages of France and the Basque country !
- Arraya dates back from the 16th Century and use to be an inn for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
- We have a restaurant for gourmets; our wine list is famous for its good quality-price ratio. We also have a wide list of Bas-Armagnac to serve.

This is an excellent hotel. The service is superb along with the food. We stayed for 10 days and had a wonderful holiday. We were late arriving but the owner waited up for us and made us feel really welcome. Lots to see and do in the area and enjoyed learning about the Basque community. Highly recommended.
