The Experience

In a valley thick with sunflowers and cornfields and rustling with poplars is this renovated house – it’s a good spot, as tranquil as can be. Views reach to the Chateau de Beauville on its promontory, while the village of Beauville (medieval, enchanting) waits on the other side. In the house, understated design and a charming simplicity prevail. A new-old tower houses the kitchen downstairs, and the master bedroom, with a private decked balcony, is up, linked by a crafted spiral stair. The cottage ‘wing’ has the sitting room down (natural stone flooring, stylish leather sofas) and two bedrooms above: white walls, sloping timbers, tiny diamond windows, velux for extra light. All doors open to the garden. A hedge screens you from the lane, there’s a perfect-for-a-snooze hammock slung between trees, and the heated pool is positioned so that splashing nippers are in sight; shade-giving banana trees and palms add an exotic touch. Hop in the car to the beautiful sand beach lake at Montaigu de Quercy, potter and shop in little Beauville, sail off on the bikes (they come with the house). Music, PlayStation, games, toys, books, satellite TV, a wood-burner for autumn stays… brilliant.

Reviews

La Maison du Papillons has the most perfect setting - tranquil and "away from it all" and yet within easy distance of beautiful villages and vineyards. The house is well equipped and comfortable, and Deborah was a helpful host - providing just the right information at just the right time. A thoroughly relaxing stay!

Sharon, Horsham

An idyllic and peaceful place to holiday with stunning views across sunflower fields towards the hill-top village of Beauville. It was incredibly relaxing. The pool, garden, toys and bikes all help keep small children entertained while the price of good wine helps keep adults happy. The stunning villages of Lauzerte and Pujols make for great excursions while Beauville has cafes, bakeries and places to buy everyday groceries. The house is brilliantly equipped and the owner was consistently easy to contact and extremely helpful. We had a fabulous two weeks - our boys didn't want to come home!

Juliette, London

Wonderfully relaxing setting in idyllic, quite surroundings. Charming house, equipped with everything you could possible need, including a good selection of toys and games for children. The pool and bikes were a real bonus, we had some delightful pedals through the countryside. Chateau de Biron and Bonaguil Castle both less than an hour and well worth a visit. The owner has been easy to contact and very helpful with queries. Everything a holiday in France should be; markets, Chateaus and lots of wildlife, our 2 young boys loved it and so did we.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Deborah Hewitt-Thomas

  • Beauville sits on a hilltop overlooking the rolling sunflower-filled Agenais countryside and is still relatively untouched by tourism. Visit the 16th century church of Saint-Jacques and its chateau on a rocky outcrop, its a 2km walk from Papillons.
  • The café on Beauville Square offers gastronomic cooking for a reasonable price, and its terrace overlooks the valley below. You'll also find a grocer, baker, pharmacy, doctor, post office, ATM, bar and tourist office.
  • The towns of Montaigu-de-Quercy, Laroque-Timbaut and Lauzerte, with their busy markets, are just a 15-minute drive. Lauzerte is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in France and is a must see, as is Pujols (around half an hour away).
  • The surrounding area is fantastic cycling country due to its quiet roads and beautiful scenery. There's an 18 hole championship golf course at Castelnaud and another at Villeneuve-sur-Lot, around half an hour's drive away.
  • Try wine tasting at surrounding vineyards or spend the day canoeing down the Tarn, Lot or Dordogne rivers. Horse riding is available 10-minutes drive away, and you can try paragliding in nearby Motaigu de Quercy.
  • Children will love spending the day at the Walibi theme & water park in nearby Agen – a half hour's drive away - or at the swimming lake in Montaigu de Quercy that has slides, a pontoon, a diving board and cafe.
