The Experience

Owner Yann, well-travelled and erudite, is your attentive host at this handsome château circled by gorgeous gardens. His eye for detail blends family antiques with contemporary furniture and paintings, set off by tall ceilings, handsome fireplaces and original parquet floors. Enjoy the theatrical flourish of sitting down for continental breakfast in the atmospheric dining room.

Float from the elegant salon to the library with TV then up to your spoiling bedroom. Two on the first floor are big with en suite bathrooms, while four bedrooms on the second floor share a shower room and have a separate sitting room. Gaze out over lawns, a tree-lined walk and orchards as you plan your day.

Visit medieval village, Labastide d’Armagnac (5 km), dip in the Barbotan-les-Thermes baths (20 km) or take a day trip to buzzy Bordeaux (1.5 hours), return for aperitifs on the sunny terrace.

Reviews

I loved the fact that stepping from the pavement in this bastide town, you enter into elegant château living with a massive garden and grounds! Very comfortable and traditional with a charming French host.

Location

The neighbourhood

Once a grand estate with huge outbuildings for stabling horses, a vineyard of over 1,000 hectares, bakery, dovecote and servants’ quarters, the domaine was the centre point for the town. Today it offers a fascinating glimpse into its history. You overlook a huge parkland, so you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere yet it's a short walk to shops and restaurants in historic St Justin.

Local points of interest from Yann De Poincy

  • St Justin is a charming bastide, built in the 13th century by the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. You will be able to see the Templar's tower, what used to be the Commanderie in the centre square.
  • St Justinwas the theatre of various battles between the French and the English during the One hundred years wars, and later in the 16th century between Catholics and Protestants (who burned the village down!).
  • Château St Justin was itself built in 1840, replacing an older building, by a famous general of the French Empire. The house has remained a noble house to this day, apart from a short break of twenty years...
  • The visitor will undoubtebly be attracted by the mighty cedar tree ruling over the gardens for the past 200 years.Different species of trees, some remarkable, are worth discovering in the peaceful and secluded park, right in the centre of the village.
  • Should you wish to indulge in gastronomic cuisine (we are in Gascony after all!), you must book a table at the Cadet de Gascogne, right next door: well worth a visit. Don't miss out also on the Restaurant Les Allées, newly opened.
  • It copuld be said that St Justin is the center of the world: easy access to major airports (Bordeaux, Toulouse, Pau), the wonderful beaches of the Atlantic, the Pyrenees, Spain and Portugal. Why not try the wonderful thermal town of Barbotan-les-Thermes?

Introducing

Yann De Poincy

Rebuilt in 1840 on far more ancient foundations, the château was built for a General of the Empire whose family lived here until 2000. Yann and his mother moved into the château in 2020. Yann has lived all over the world and as a British Airways pilot he's well-travelled and full of interesting stories that he loves to share. He is a Knight of the Order of St John Jerusalem.
