The Experience

Off the main road, climb the hill, and lose yourself in 116 acres of woods, fields and doe-eyed cows. This is Rigal: a pale-shuttered 1700s manoir with a medieval tower, and a low-slung mellow-stone farmhouse. The owners, warm-hearted and charming, open up the main house to guests from May to October (and move to the nearby village). You can come as a party of six, or eight, or combine the two houses for a glorious gathering. Rigal is bliss for city escapees and especially families, with its all-wood playground, super-safe pool, table-tennis, rabbits, pigs and ponies. As for the interiors, they are warmly contemporary, from the kitchen of the manoir (raw stone walls, transparent chairs, huge stainless-steel oven) to the farmhouse’s stylish west-facing patio. Come for the first strawberries in April, the wild orchids in May, and the wines all year round, from famous Monbazillac to tiny appellations. Stock up at Lalinde’s Thursday market (8km); kayak down the Dordogne. Back home are outdoor seating areas where you can chase the sun or shade. In the bedrooms: polished floors, drenching showers, dreamy mattresses, delicious bedding.

Le Rigal is one of the most beautiful places we have stayed in. The interior is stylish and welcoming and the setting, simply stunning. I don't think the photos do it justice as it’s so spacious! The birdsong and nature was endlessly enjoyed, from our morning coffee on the terrace to our sundowner wine! Whilst we loved exploring the beautiful area (and there is so much to see) our family holiday was even more special because of Le Rigal! Our hosts Jacky and Chris were just fabulous - so friendly and helpful! Cant recommend this place enough!

We've just returned from a wonderful stay at Rigal - a beautiful location in the heart of the Dordogne and wonderful accommodation, lovely hosts and so many great, local things to do. The house was just stunning and well equipped with everything we needed as a family of 6. Our children absolutely loved feeding the animals every morning and are already asking to go back! We've come home with lots of wonderful memories and would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a lovely holiday in a beautiful part of France.

Visit magnificent Sarlat, beautiful villages that cling to the riverside cliffs, chateaux of Beynac, Castelnaud, Bridoire, Milandes and stunning Marquessac with its acres of box hedging beautifully manicured, Easter egg hunts in spring, candlelit in summer
For food lovers try the Vieux logis in Tremolat for an unforgettable lunch or evening and then search out the Auberges such as Les Truffieres, Reyberrot or Queyssac offering home grown traditional french cuisine at incredible value, 4 courses for €13!
Take time to explore the local vineyards from the sweet desert wines of Monbazillac, the smooth St Emillions, Chateau Tiregand and Terre Vielle. The pleasure is discovering hidden vineyard treasures and tasting the wine surrounded by the ripening grapes.
Explore the ancient history of the Lascaux caves and paintings, the natural wonders of Proumeyssac or Mexange Grottes, marvel at the surroundings as you canoe down the river gazing at the chateaux, kingfishers darting to and fro and enjoy the tranquility.
You can of course just relax at Rigal, swim in the pool, go for a run , walk or cycle in the nearby woods or help us feed the animals each morning. Sit in the shade and read a good book before a BBQ, watching the deer cross the fields as the sun sets!
