The Experience

Walk into a grand hallway with sweeping staircase and a happy, homely atmosphere. Relax in the calming sitting room with plump sofas, high ceiling and marble fireplace – a fine spot for a quiet read with light flooding in. The elegant dining room is down here too, but you’ll probably spend much of your time upstairs in the big open-plan lounge and kitchen/diner. This is the heart of the house and will be a joy to cook in, with everybody being sociable around you.

On warm days you’ll be eating on the stone terrace, listening to birdsong and gentle church bells, dozing off on a comfy lounger or seeking shade under a parasol. The more energetic can hurl themselves into a game of table tennis, walk into serene countryside or set off on bike rides (there’s safe storage).

Bedrooms are light-filled and spacious with plump, well-turned-out beds, wooden floors and colourful rugs. All have views, one has doors onto the terrace and gardens.

Reviews

Manoir Les Altheas is so homely, it will have you make-believing it's your own Dordogne retreat. Everyone is sure to gather in the kitchen/diner or step out onto the stone-laid terrace to enjoy drinks in the golden sunshine, relaxing gently as you listen to birds and distant church bells. Explore nearby Lalinde or Bergerac, stroll by the river, or just unwind in the orchard with a good book: wonderful!

Location

The neighbourhood

In the village is the church (the bells stop between 8pm and 7am), an auberge which serves traditional French dishes and the medieval Château de Lanquais which you can glimpse from the garden and visit in the summer months. There are restaurants and shops in Couze and beautiful buildings in the bastide town of Lalinde, through which the river runs.

Local points of interest from Catherine & Richard Esling

  • Explore reputable vineyards and wine producers of red, dry white and sweet white wines close by - just a 20 to 30 minutes drive. World class wines such as Pecharmant and Monbazillac. Visits and tastings a-plenty!
  • Château de Lanquais and the lake are only a 500 yards walk from the house. Built in the 16th century by the same architect as the Louvre in Paris.
  • Very peaceful, private, secluded terrace and garden, not overlooked, backing onto farmland. Many different birds including black redstarts and hoopoes.
  • The Sunday morning market in the medieval town of Issigeac is only 15 minutes away - This is an absolute must! Several good restaurants in the village too, but book first.
  • The market town of Bergerac is only 20 minutes by car. Great wine centre with terraces overlooking the Dordogne river. Boat trips on old wooden gabarre from the old quarter.
  • Château Les Merles is only 15 minutes from the house. Great restaurant with huge outside terrace, it is also a hotel, challenging 9 hole golf course and produce their own very good wines.
