The Experience

This elegant Périgord stone manor house was built in the 1500s and has mullioned windows, high ceilings with thick beams, stone flagged floors. All the rooms are in the main house, or the extension behind it. Big bedrooms (all have air-conditioning) are symphonies of wood and stone, unbleached linen and cotton, pared back simplicity and elegance; bathrooms are spacious.

Food is equally good: you breakfast on homemade jam, fresh fruit salad, home baked cakes, eggs any way you want them, freshly-squeezed juices and locally-roasted coffee. It’s worth staying in for supper – Gaël makes his own foie gras and cooks only Périgordine dishes using truffles, duck, wonderful puddings and cheeses. Local wines are Monbazillac, Bergerac – the owners can point you to tastings.

From the house guests can set out on walks through wooded valleys to pretty villages in all directions. Return to a comfortable sitting room and a fire in winter.

Reviews

Beautifully restored buildings. Gael has great passion for the architecture and the attention to detail is second to none. The bedrooms are comfortable and stylish and the breakfast is delicious with home made cake, jams and flaky croissants. You will not be disappointed if you choose to stay in this lovely place.

It really is heavenly! The perfect place to completely unwind. Gael, the wonderful and particular host has thought of everything, from the fragrant filled and stunningly decorated rooms, classy playlist, exquisite breakfast and really comfortable beds.

What a wonderful find and beautiful place to spend 3 nights. Gael was a most welcoming and personable host. Our room was spotless and fitted out to a very high and luxurious standard. The bed was super comfortable and had gorgeous bed linen. Thank you Gael for your truly wonderful breakfasts! All produce are sourced locally and the croissants were by far the best we’ve had in France. They were so crispy on the outside with a delicious soft flaky centre! The preserves, cottage cheese and cake were all home made. The outside area and swimming pool was very relaxing. Thanks Gaël we will return.

Angela, Bristol

I really loved the monastic simplicity of this exquisite place. The owners have cherished every architectural vestige during its restoration - the bedrooms are vast, almost grandiose, but they are simply decorated. The land which surrounds the house has been given to meadow and tree and the effect is very calming. A beautiful place to escape the tourists that flock to the Dordogne.

Location

The neighbourhood

Périgueux is 35 minutes away by car, with a 12th-century cathedral; in the other direction are the botanical gardens at Chartreuse du Colombiers and the abbey in Paunat (20 minute-drive) which offers a glimpse into monastic life and medieval history of the area. Discover Bastide towns, kayak on the Dordogne from Limeuil (flashing past caves, towns, castles.) Sarlat is a must with market, shops, restaurants - better out of season.
