The Experience

It’s romantic here, in the true sense: a wild landscape, a 15th-century water mill with history seeping out of its stone walls and the river murmuring underneath you. The feel is relaxed: the bird-filled garden is rambling and you’re welcome to take cuttings, the house has interesting pictures and family photos, the kitchen cupboards are full of stuff you can use (just replace it) and a bottle of wine will be waiting.

Children will love ‘the dorm’ with its four single beds and a vast amount of toys, books and games in wicker baskets. The big double has a seating area and dreamy views over the river and garden. Plenty of room downstairs in the kitchen, dining room, big sitting room and conservatory means you shan’t feel cramped.

Take the bikes and cycle, walk the lovely countryside – you won’t come across another soul. Return to cool off in the natural pool or fish in the stream while you watch the stars come out.

Reviews

Le Moulin is a little piece of Paradise. A retreat to get away, breathe and recharge. The mill envelopes you with its charm and the wildlife brings you back to nature. A fantastic stay with everything you could need. A rustic property full of character and history. A very well equipped kitchen which was a real plus. Dog friendly garden - our dogs had a blast. Walks through the woods via the back gate where you can roam without seeing anyone else. The owls will hoot to you over a relaxed glass of wine in the evening as you watch the stars playing chilled music. We didn’t want to leave!

Absolutely fabulous. Beautiful location in a forest, gorgeous old house surrounded by water, a lawn with enough space for games and reading under the apple tree, sound of trickling water in the living room, decoration a feast for the eyes... Great for nature lovers and people who want to relax away from the city.

We have stayed in Le Moulin de Connezac with our family with 6 adults. What a great place to relax. In the middle of nice forest and fields. Great bird and wild animal watching here. We spotted deer, roe deer, weasel and even a badger. Very impressive. We biked on our own race bikes in the surroundings and used the available bikes and kayak as well. The kitchen is fully equipped (thanks Jacqui) which allowed us to prepare various local famous Dordogne meals.

This is a retreat for those nature lovers wanting to kick back and relax in peaceful isolation. You can walk the countryside paths to your hearts content here with only the wild landscape and river to surround you.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're deep in the Dordogne countryside with all its plump greenery. The nearest village is Mareuil (5kms) where you'll find everything you need: three boulangeries, a butcher, a regional wine shop and also supermarkets. There are also a couple of cafés for people watching, a fine old church and an ancient castle ruin. Market day is a Tuesday in the morning. Brantôme is close for canoeing.

Local points of interest from Jacqui Gray

  • The Water Mill dates back to 1429 and transformed into a home over the last 100 years. We also have a small water Mill down the garden. The property has 2 streams around the garden. You can take a dip in the natural pond, behind Le Petit Moulin.
  • Take a visit to Brantome for the Abbey, drive to Aubeterre for a lovely stroll, hop over to Cognac and discover Cognac makers, then taste the local Pineau! St Jean de Cole is delightful. Look out for the old churches dating back to Roman times.
  • The nearest Chateaux belongs to the Lavagne family. Whereas the Connezac Chateaux is a nice bike ride away. Cycling in the summer evenings is beautiful, sunflower fields and beautiful evening light. There is a Brocante near Beaussac, full of all sorts.
  • You can walk from Le Moulin over fields, through woods and up over the hill. Lots to explore, foraging in the woods is fun.
  • We have horse riding in lovely traditional stables about 2 km away. Kayaking is available on The Dronne River from Brantome.
  • The local shops are about 5km away in Mareuil, from a great wine shop to local meats and breads and croissants. The market is every Tuesday morning selling fresh local produce. Nontron has a great Bio supermarket and is famous for its knives.

Introducing

Jacqui Gray

Jacqui bought the mill in 2019 and uses it as her oasis of calm in between travelling for her work. Roman, the guardian lives in the studio above the garage and is passionate about nature. He has a smattering of English so if you need anybody you can rely on him.
