The Experience

Swoop down country lanes lined with nodding sunflowers to this tranquil stone house hugged by rural peace. Once a manoir for the nobility, today it is a characterful and much-loved family home filled with cosy spaces, a grand fire-warmed living room, bedrooms with views and small yet spotless bathrooms.

Cleverly fusing new and old, traditional stone walls and beams add charm while the modern kitchen has all the kit and caboodle for cooking and eating together – or you’ll barbecue and dine outside in the undercover courtyard lit up with solar lights and twinkling candles. The set-up is fantastic for families with big relaxed gardens, a swimming pool, outdoor table tennis and football plus books and games for wet weather days.

Pop to your closest town, Ribérac (8km), for restaurants, shopping and an excellent Friday market. It’s perfect for a potter around with two churches and a municipal lido.

Reviews

Le Figuier is a charming property which oozes historical details whilst being sympathetically restored by the current owners to become a comfortable home for the 21st-century family. There is room to play together and relax apart whilst being immersed in the stunning French country landscape. There is easy access to beautiful towns which offer great shopping, historical buildings, canoeing, wild water swimming and delicious restaurants. Location

The neighbourhood

You're surrounded by pretty towns including riverside Saint-Astier (18km), Les Plus Beaux Villages Aubeterre-sur-Dronne (25km) and Brantôme (35km) which has a gorgeous cathedral and river tours. Nature lovers, walkers and cyclists will all be in heaven while vineyards for tours and tastings abound.

Local points of interest from Sally-Anne Holland

  • Ribérac has a wonderful Friday market, selling local produce, fresh flowers, plants, fish, pottery, clothes and much more. You can relax after your shop in one of several local cafes and watch the world go by. If river swimming is your thing, there are plenty of opportunities to swim.
  • Brantome, a beautiful medieval town surrounded by water, known as the “Venice of the Perigord”, is just 40 minutes’ drive. With its imposing Benedictine Abbey, founded by Charlemagne in the 8th Century, wonderful artisan shops and market selling local produce on Friday, it is well worth a visit.
  • Bordeilles 25 minutes away, is a charming village with panoramic views overlooking the river Dronne. Visitors can visit the Chateau which is two castles. The fortress built in the 13th and 14th centuries and the 16th century Chateau. There are several restaurants and a Sunday market.
  • Verteillac (25 minutes drive) is a picturesque village with lively bars, shops and a Saturday market. It is probably most famous for its Brocante market which takes place on the first Sunday of every month.
  • Aubeterre sur Dronne, the only village classified amongst the Most Beautiful Villages of France in Charente, is just 20 minutes away. The village is home to local artists and crafts people and has some lovely restaurants and interesting shops.
