The Experience
These charming properties are set in a cluster of buildings with some parts dating to the 17th century. Le Tilleul has a mezzanine sleeping space for two and La Juliette has open-plan living and sleeping areas on one level. Le Grenier is set at the back and has a private garden and two bedrooms in the eaves – you’ll need to watch your head.
Each has its own entrance, kitchen and outdoor dining area, and a summer kitchen has covered space for everyone to eat together if you’re a group. Caroline (who was on MasterChef and is a great cook) is happy to prepare a welcome meal if asked and leaves a welcome hamper with local butter, jams, bread and pastries, and local wine.
There are lots of options for walking and cycling in the area, with the charming towns of Aubeterre and Brantôme a pleasant drive away. Le Petit Coutures restaurant in Coutures, about two miles away, is very well known and popular with locals and guests alike.

The final kilometre to Le Cluzeau indicated the type of holiday we would have - remote! Caroline's welcome was warm and friendly, and her attention to detail faultless - she had provided everything we could possibly need. We stayed in the largest gite, rustic in appearance but with all modern conveniences. Civilisation drifted away as we relaxed and enjoyed the area to the background of birdsong. We visited places on Caroline’s helpful list, but as the weather was good, we made the most of the sun terrace and saline swimming pool. Le Cluzeau is a wonderful place to relax and we hope to return.

My wife and I recently enjoyed a wonderful relaxing stay at Le Cluzeau. Driving up the hill to the main house on arrival, we were awestruck by the beautiful setting. We stayed in the largest of the three gîtes, a beautiful rustic, self-catering, two-story cottage that exceeded our expectations. The pool area was a particular highlight, offering spectacular views of the valley and equipped with comfortable sunbeds. So tranquil. Just what we needed. The host, Caroline, was exceptionally hospitable and knowledgeable about the area. Hope to return next year with a group and hire all 3 gîtes.

Stayed here for a couple of days in early June and only wish we could have been here longer. Typical farmhouse with beautifully appointed rooms that have been developed around the property giving a sense of privacy, but only seconds from meeting others if using the whole complex. Views of surrounding farmland with mature gardens and a specimen lime tree at the centre, a gardener's feast for the eyes. Our hosts were welcoming and had thoughtfully stocked the pantry with tea, coffee etc., but were quick to ask if we needed anything else and seemed determined that our stay lacked for nothing.

The location of Le Cluzeau took my breath away when I drove up to it and I wasn't expecting to be as wowed by it as I was. The owner has worked magic, teasing this ancient site into the 21st century – she has used her skills as an accomplished artist to curate the indoor and outdoor space into quirky but well-curated spaces for guests to enjoy whilst settled into the stunning French countryside.

Location
The neighbourhood
You’re right in the middle of beautiful French countryside, on a no through road with only one other small house along the lane. The closest village shops and weekly markets are 5km away in Vertillac. Riberac for a supermarket is 9km. Aubeterre and Brantôme are close.
Local points of interest from Caroline Van Wyke
- Riberac: Wander around to discover a variety of small shops, café/bars and restaurants. On Fridays throughout the year, Riberac hosts the biggest market in the area.
- Brantome: One of the most visited towns in the area thanks to its beauty and historical interest. A stunning abbey, a stunning riverside setting and a pretty town. Twice weekly markets and great restaurants and cafés. River trips a must.
- Close to Brantome in the town of Champagnac de Belair is Le Moulin Du Roc - Hôtel 5 étoiles and Restaurant gastronomique, on a magical riverside setting. Book early to avoid disappointment.
- Aubeterre sur Dronne: A beautiful village with a spectacular monolithic/subterranean church carved out of the rock. A tour with headphones in several languages. Charming town with boutique shops and restaurants. River swimming and beaches.
- Verteillac: A village with cafes and restaurants, but if you’re here on the first Sunday of the month there is a large Brocante (antique) market. Live music often through the summer months.
- Perigueux: A beautiful, architecturally stunning city with a maze of medieval cobbled lanes lined with shops opening into squares with cafés and restaurants offering a wide range of international cuisines. The cathedral is beautiful and lit at night.

Introducing
Caroline Van Wyke
Caroline lives in the main house in the centre of the property. She is an artist who has lived in France for many years and also speaks French and a little German. She had a wedding business in the past so is well versed in dealing with people and is a lovely host.
We absolutely loved staying at Le Cluzeau! We had a wonderfully friendly welcome from our host Caroline who provided everything we could possibly want for our first day, and indeed the whole stay: BBQ; private garden full of songbirds; laundry facilities; Bluetooth speaker; sumptuous bedding and towels; kitchen equipment of every variety,... you name it,.. it's there for you! This is a spectacularly beautiful part of France, and so peaceful surrounded by fields of maize and sunflowers; lovely walks nearby. The pool is heaven! Highly, highly recommended.
