The Experience

This well converted 18th-century pépiniériste’s (plantsman’s) house sits in a small hamlet with impressive views over the Dordogne river. A blend of traditional and contemporary furniture creates a relaxed feel; big sofas are opposite an open fireplace, the painted wooden table is perfect for family meals, the kitchen is modern and you’ll find books, DVDs and games.

Compact bedrooms have white walls, squashy mattresses and bright paintings; functional shower rooms have lovely Cole & Lewis fragrances. The garden is laid to gravel with a trickling water feature; on warm days you can chill out on the rooftop sundeck, float in the pool, wild swim in the river or dine al fresco on the terrace. Do your prepping in the covered summer kitchen.

Here you are spoiled for outdoor activities and wine tastings – there are vineyards galore. Tailor-made residential art courses are now available by acclaimed artist Eric Bourse.

Reviews

We booked Villa Shambala and Petite Shambala for three weeks to celebrate my husband's special birthday. It was a wonderful venue to share with friends and family over this time, the views of the Dordogne will stay with us for a long time! Kit and Eric were very welcoming and our holiday certainly lived up to expectations.

Villa Shambhala is a magical place, its situation on the banks of the magestic Dordogne in the heart of the countryside is a dream. There is something to suit all needs whether you wish to explore the delights of the surrounding towns and villages or nip to the local boulangerie and shops then spend your time at home making use of the fully equipped kitchen and terraces. Reading, eating and drinking the local wines, what more does a holiday maker want? Well, visiting St Emilion's beautiful church: the Sunday market at Issigeac were we had a wonderful lunch at L"Atelier, it is all superb.

What a heavenly place to stay! My husband and I took our three children and absolutely loved our week at Shambhala. Kit is an incredible host and the location is fabulous. Trips to the lakes, kayaks down the Dordogne and visits to local village markets made for a perfect French holiday. Highly recommended!

What a magical place. Villa Shambhala exceeded all expectations of a family holiday, from the moment we arrived to the final farewell I felt like my family and I were living a dream. The attention to detail was outstanding, from the charming hostess to the stunning views of the Dordogne, family bike rides through the vineyards, kayaking down the wide and beautiful river and not to mention the divine wine sampled most days from the local chateaus AND the beds are so comfy and luxurious! This holiday is by far my favourite and I can't wait to head back there this summer.
