The Experience

Up a country lane, with acres of woodland, gardens and stunning valley views, is a delicious tobacco farmhouse and a colourful cottage. The British owners have restored both with artistic flair, adding modern day comforts yet retaining the old spirit. The split-level main house has a magnificent veranda for breakfast and an aperitif arbour. Inside, find a big, friendly kitchen/sitting room at its heart: new white units and old Welsh dressers, rugs on granite floors, squashy red sofas, a chandelier in the rafters, an open fire stacked with logs. There are four bedrooms with polished mahogany beds, charming patchwork quilts, old beams and two bathrooms (one at the bottom of a stair); soft toys and books in the mezzanine room keep children happy and there are fans for warm nights. The cottage has its own garden shaded by wild plum trees. Inside, it’s tiny yet vibrant with brocante finds, heaps of art and all you need for a cosy stay: sitting room, quirky kitchen, fresh shower room and open stairs to the mezzanine bedroom; mind your head! History and beauty are close: Les Eysies, Monpazier, Sarlat, Domme. Return to barbecues, an abundance of wild flowers and a pristine pool.

Reviews

Thank-you so much for sharing your glorious home, gardens and pool with us. It has given us the opportunity to spend valuable time with our family. Everyone had a wonderful time and the children (& adults) particularly enjoyed the pool. The 'pool Olympics' became a daily ritual. We loved the wildlife + nature around us + the younger children enjoyed learning about the insects that visited. We would love to come again.

Jayne & Ian, UK

Loved this place so much in 2017 we went back for a second visit in 2018, for a glorious two weeks this time. It is the most spectacular place we have ever stayed in. Every morning we awoke excited to discover new wildlife and drink in the spectacular views. This year we saw deer outside our bedroom, wild boar drinking at the pond and the fervent activity of a family of jays. Thanks to a heat wave we spent long lingering days next to the pool but did manage time canoeing on the Dordorgne (using Canoe Raid in Siorac) and a visit to the Chateau in Castelnaud la Chapelle. We will return.

It is difficult to know where to start with listing what is special about this place… there are the superb verandas where we often sat and ate supper; the breakfast room was a real favourite, with its constant bird activity (we saw a black woodpecker, redstarts and a flurry of tits); the superb kitchen which was a pleasure to cook in; the gorgeous bedrooms, ours with its own courtyard; and we all loved the pool, and the pond was a complete delight, with frogs, fish and a snake! We wished for another week or two here as it felt so comfortable but so special too.

Ever been to a place that's so nice you dont want tell anyone so that you can go back easily?? Thanks Stephen and Sawdays for a truly wonderful holiday. The Simply Perigord Staff were really helpful and quick to respond. A wonderful farmhouse feel with big grounds so we had the joy of Dordogne weather but with shade if needed. Lovely balcony at the back of the house and just really nice features all round. Ive never been back to the same Gite on holiday - I think this may be the first exception! Best wishes, Peter & Nicky

Peter

Disturbed a wild boar in the wood. The house was magical. We did manage to have 3 frogs & a stoat in the spotless pool which was a bit of fun!

Patrick

Loved the trees in the garden. Enchanting house and gardens.

Ruth

What a fun house! We are still finding things hiding in the garden. The house and garden are so lovely that we hardly went anywhere else. I would recommend this house for a magical family holiday for all ages.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Stephen Taylor

  • Wonderful Bastide architecture in towns and villages nearby, including Baynac, Limeuil (reputed to be one of the most beautiful villages in France), Sarlat – spectacular buildings.
  • Wonderfully colourful and vibrant local markets, details included in the house. Our favourites are Le Bugue, St Cyprien, La Bouisson and Sarlat.
  • Dordogne river close by for canoeing trips - for the energetic, long distance trips can be organised but a bus ride upstream enables you to meander back downstream, stopping for a picnic on the way and admiring the stunning castles and villages on the way.
  • Golf, Cycling, Tennis, Balloon Trips, Horse Riding, Fishing and other activities can be found nearby with details at the house, which you can organise yourself or through our local agent.
  • There is usually a Brocante or Vide Grenier (empty loft) market somewhere in the region either during the week or most weekends and these are fantastic places for curios, bargains and something a little French to take home as a souvenir.
  • Why not just treat yourself to a quiet day relaxing in the grounds, swimming in the pool or sitting by the pond watching the abundance of wildlife; if you're lucky you'll catch a glimpse of the deer as they wander through the large field beyond the pond.
