The Experience

The style is very relaxed and unfussy with lots of character in old stone walls and features, big fireplaces. There are two sitting rooms downstairs, one leading to the other and both with wood-burners, good WiFi, smart TVs, games and books for rainy days. The dining barn has a big table which happily seats 12 and bi-fold doors to the terrace overlooking the pool and grounds.

The kitchen is very well thought out and has everything you need but you will also be invited over to the owners’ garden for a 5-course dinner with wine, surrounded by romantic fairy lights draped over the apple trees. You can order a catered breakfast/brunch or enjoy a cookery day with Denise.

The wide terrace is deep enough for dancing, the saltwater pool is lovely and you can play badminton or pétanque. Bedrooms are comfortable and there is one downstairs.

I loved the atmosphere of this place – the pretty honey-coloured stone walls and the sunny exposure made it as warm and welcoming as the owners. This is a wonderful, peaceful base for exploring the Dordogne valley and I would love to take off with a picnic into those walnut grove-covered hills and explore.

The neighbourhood

Walk for miles through the hills, wander through walnut groves to the river, find secret swimming spots, tour local breweries, gaze at Château Cazenac. There are some great back routes for cyclists of all ages and fitness levels. Kayak on the river 5kms away, buy food from an incredible variety of markets and bring it back to cook, or eat out at good restaurants the owners can recommend.

History and pre-history, we are steeped in it! Surrounded by medieval villages, caves of crystal, caves with paintings all close by. Lascaux, Proumeyssac, Font de Gaume and the Troglodyte museum at Les Eyzies, book in advance though.
A different day, a different local market to purchase local produce. The summer months bring the evening marchés gourmandes. Long tables, local producers cooking local delights, wonderful aromas, music and dancing are evenings to make memories.
Close to the ‘confluence’ of the Dordogne and Vezere rivers, there is much riverside wandering and picnicking to be done...Or take a randonnée with a canoe and take in the views from the river itself.
Take a gentle stroll along the lane to our local honey producers Lionel and Charlotte who are happy to let you sample their honey and other delicious products.
Local Breweries, wine bars, restaurants and the summer food trucks give a wide variety of choice for eating out. Or eat in with a leisurely 5 course meal provided by your hosts.

Introducing

Denise Gilmour & Kevin Wheeler

Denise was a freelance chef and Kevin worked in IT. They had been coming to France on holiday with their children for 30 years, then buckled to temptation and bought a ruined barn which they renovated during the holidays. Once that was done they realised it was time to move to France permanently, and they bought the farm Redouline in 2008. They are lovely hosts and keen to help make your stay memorable.
