The Experience

Poised between the Périgord Noir and the Périgord Pourpre – Bergerac and Bordeaux on one side, caves and castles on the other – is a hilltop retreat with 13th-century origins. For small groups holidaying together, particularly those who like their own private space, it’s perfect.

The owners, a friendly English couple, live to one side of a large gravelled courtyard dotted with lavender, and the gîtes face the other way. Alongside: a huge communal barn where you can get together, a simple kitchen with Nespresso on tap, and a spacious dining terrace with marvellous views – perfect for for convivial meals. There are books and games for all ages, a pool to float in and a hot tub to bubble in.

Borrow bikes and pedal down to Villamblard, or stroll through the forest; pick up croissants, visit the weekly market, pop into one of the bar/restaurants for a simple meal. Périgueux or Bergerac are both a 30-minute drive.

One feels like you have arrived at your own retreat. It is so peaceful with so much open space around you. There are 3 "gites" which are all perfectly placed which means one can arrive with your large family or friend group. Should you book 1 gite you will have enough privacy, you can easily escape from it all. The property has easy access to all the tourism spots in the Dordogne Valley.

A beautiful location in unspoilt Dordogne countryside 45 minutes walk from a 'typical' French village - the France of my childhood! Alongside this idyll, Michael and Mandy are fabulous hosts - truly wanting to share the beautifully renovated farmstead that they moved their family to 8 years ago: they could not have been more helpful but were never intrusive. We stayed for two weeks and, due to easy access to Bergerac Airport, it was the perfect venue to get all the family together, with different family members joining us when schedules allowed. We got the ferry home from Ouistreham.

The neighbourhood

You're in the heart of the Dordogne, only a short walk to the local village, and surrounded by pretty medieval villages – Bergerac and Périgueux are both a 30-minute drive. Saint-Émilion is an hour away and the area is stuffed with châteaux and vineyards for wine tasting tours. Cosmopolitan and lively Bordeaux, France's sixth largest city, is a 1.5 hour drive, and the coast a little further.

Discover this authentic French area, a hideaway off the beaten track and away from the tourist trail. This is the true French lifestyle; restaurants full of locals serving rustic French food that are unbelievably good value set in pretty quaint villages.
Only half an hour from the capital of the Dordogne, the beautiful medieval city of Perigueux. Visit the magnificent cathedral, a UNESCO heritage site, wander through the cobbled streets, the bustling markets and stop for lunch in one of the pretty squares.
Walking and cycle trails lead from your very own front door in the beautiful countryside. Everything is provided- rucksacks, picnic rug, picnic plates, maps and directions, binoculars and even a nature trail and scavenger hunt to keep children entertained.
After a day out sightseeing, relax on your own private terrace or on the terrace overlooking the pool and admire the stunning panoramic views of the countryside in the evening sun, the perfect place to sit whilst watching the sun set.
Swim at the nearby lake (a 10 minute drive) with a sandy beach, then enjoy some tapas and organic wine whilst watching some live French music as the sun goes down - a beautiful setting and a lovely atmosphere.
Try some wine-tasting and buy your own wine straight from the local producer surrounded by vineyards. The local Bergerac wine and dessert wine is great value, or drive out to Saint Emilion or Bordeaux for the world class outstanding vintage claret.

Michael and Mandy moved into their beautifully renovated gîtes in the Dordogne in 2015 and still love their life in the valley. They have three very well behaved dogs and two cats that you'll meet. They're very knowledgeable about the local area and are happy to advise.
