The Experience

A flawless spot for rest and recuperation with friends or family, with an adorable garden, lots of space and dreamy views of the river. A large open-plan living and dining space is colourful with exceptional art, a long wooden dining table for convivial meals, comfy sofas and chairs and a big square kitchen with a range cooker and all the kit you could want. Shopping can be ordered ahead and you can buy eggs and honey from the owners.

Two staircases lead to the four bedrooms, all with handsome beds, more good art and awesome views over the garden and down to the river. The ground floor opens out onto a large riverside terrace with a pond full of lazy fish and a dining area with barbecue. Soak in the outdoor bath, have picnics down by the river, do laps in the pool, sunbathe on smart deck chairs, order spa treatments or even a chef. It’s a very spoiling place.

Tour superb vineyards, bowl down the river, buy local food from markets.

Reviews

Absolutely first class. We were a very last minute booking and Peter and Serge were enormously helpful and accommodating. The house is so exquisitely and tastefully furnished, very comfortable large beds with excellent shower and huge bath. Breakfast is superb, freshly picked fruit salad and squeezed juice, the most delicious “eggs of the day”. Peter is a fantastic cook and only uses the best ingredients. The location, dreamy garden, huge pool, river frontage, goats/chickens and superb recommendations were unexpected but encapsulated a highly recommended place to stay.

The Cottage is a delightfully appointed and stylishly curated French house situated within beautiful gardens with a riverside location. It is very unusual to have such a riverside frontage and guests could sit for may hours just watching the river flow past. The cottage has exclusive use of a lovely pool and terrace also overlooking the river, and the opportunity to use a quirky outdoor bath!

Location

The neighbourhood

Walking and cycling along quiet footpaths and roads will be sublime. Wine tours are essential – try Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, Côtes de Castillon, Bergerac, Montravel and more. Visit fabulous street markets in fortified villages and towns with medieval buildings, wander cobbled streets, sit at cafés people-watching, play golf on a choice of two good courses, eat in Michelin-starred restaurants.

Local points of interest from Peter Cullen

  • Domaine des Monges is a 18th century Manoir fronting onto the beautiful Dordogne river. The landscape gardens lead to private steps taking you down to the waters edge. The Dordogne river, especially in front of our property is clean and safe for swimming.
  • Domaine des Monges is in the heart of the famous Bordeaux wine area. We can arrange wine tastings and winery visits. St Emilion is less than a 30minute drive away and is a world renowned wine destination and a UNESCO classified village.
  • Our cottage is a perfect departure point for walks along the river and through the nearby vines. Canoes and electric bicycles can be rented just down the river. There are 2 world class golf courses nearby. Tennis can be arranged at a local court.
  • We are completely spoilt by the choice of restaurants around us. You can choose from a riverside cafes to international level gourmet restaurants. Three of our local wineries offer food platters to accompany their great wines.
  • We have a tiny train station just down the road and trains run very regularly either in the direction of St Emilion/ Bordeaux or towards Bergerac/Sarlat. Bordeaux is less than 1 hour by train and Sarlat a little more.

Introducing

Peter Cullen

Peter and Serge are warm and welcoming and passionate about their patch of paradise. They've filled their beautiful home with many interesting objects and paintings collected from their wide travels and created the most lovely garden. They have a friendly dog called George, bees busy making honey for the B&B guests, happy hens and three very sociable goats which you are welcome to say hello to.
