The Experience

Come and be royally cossetted in the luscious Dordogne countryside. Three big bedrooms in the main house, all with dreamy views, are stylish but not stuffy, filled with interesting furniture and artwork and are an absolute pleasure to spend time in. Bathrooms, two en suite and a private one across the hallway, are of the pink marble variety and have local handmade soaps and soft robes.

Breakfast is a mini feast of home-produced honey, local bread and pastries, homemade jam, eggs from their hens, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes and freshly squeezed orange juice. There are five different outdoor areas to enjoy all this (and a winter dining room) and you also have the use of an indoor or outdoor kitchen. You can even hire a chef to cook for you. Take a book to the beautiful guest drawing room if the weather isn’t fine.

Mostly you’ll be out in that fabulous garden with mature trees and year-round interest. The planting is clever.

  • Waking up to such views, wandering down for a delicious breakfast somewhere in the garden – you choose
  • Floating in the pool, sunbathing, being utterly idle, wondering whether you can ever be bothered to move a muscle again
  • Walking through the gardens, along the river and into the woods through vineyards – a dreamy spot for romantics or artists

Location

The neighbourhood

You're in a hamlet with a handful of other houses but the feel is very private. There are oodles of good restaurants within a five-minute drive and several Michelin-starred ones in Saint-Émilion. Walks are sublime, there are two excellent golf courses nearby and many vineyards to visit. Canoe, play tennis, hire electric bikes or visit charming bastide villages with markets. Bergerac is 40 minutes.

Local points of interest from Peter Cullen

  • Domaine des Monges is a 18th century Manoir fronting onto the beautiful Dordogne river. The landscape gardens lead to private steps taking you down to the waters edge. The Dordogne river, especially in front of our property is clean and safe for swimming.
  • A wonderful hot breakfast is served in our charming dining room or in various hidden corners of our garden - even under a rose covered gazebo. Our own chickens provide the eggs for breakfast and our bees, in two hives, provide the honey.
  • Our B&B is a perfect departure point for walks along the river and through the nearby vines. Canoes and electric bicycles can be rented just down the river. There are 2 world class golf courses nearby. Tennis can be arranged at a local court.
  • We are completely spoilt by the choice of restaurants around us. You can choose from a riverside cafes to international level gourmet restaurants. Three of our local wineries offer food platters to accompany their great wines.
  • Domaine des Monges is in the heart of the famous Bordeaux wine area. We can arrange wine tastings and winery visits. St Emilion is less than a 30minute drive away and is a world renowned wine destination and a UNESCO classified village.
  • We have a tiny train station just down the road and trains run very regularly either in the direction of St Emilion/ Bordeaux or towards Bergerac/Sarlat. Bordeaux is less than 1 hour by train and Sarlat a little more.

Introducing

Peter Cullen

Peter and Serge are warm and welcoming and passionate about their patch of paradise. They've filled their beautiful home with many interesting objects and paintings collected from their wide travels and created the most lovely garden. They have a friendly dog called George, bees busy making honey for the B&B guests, happy hens and three very sociable goats which you are welcome to say hello to.
