The Experience

This former wine château dates from the 1700s and overlooks vineyards and the ruins of 14th century Château de Gurson. The inside is grand without being too precious and there’s plenty of room in a spacious kitchen and several places to eat outside, as well as two barbecue areas. In the château and the gites you’ll find a welcome hamper with two bottles of wine – one from each neighbour – plus beer, cake, pâté, crisps, sweets and treats for the dog.

The Lac de Gurson, a fresh-water swimming lake with lifeguards and a café, is 2.5 kilometres away and you can paddle-board or kayak on the Dordogne – or stay home and swim in the pool. Spend the day exploring the six acres of wonderful grounds, orchard with heritage fruit trees and the many vineyards nearby – Saint-Emilion is close by too.

The two gites have their own outdoor spaces, so if anybody wants to escape the general throng from time to time, these are peaceful retreats.

The pool isn't fenced off but there is an alarm and you can close the gate from the terrace

Other details: Minimum stay: 5 nights. 7 nights during July & August. The château and gites can all be rented together (8 bedrooms + space for sofa beds/extra bed). Use of pool only when château is part of rental. One of the gites sleeps 2 adults and 2 kids.

3rd time lucky (2 x covid postponements!) and worth the wait. Classic french chateau Lovely ambience to it and great facilities. We hardly moved for the week. Just enjoyed the pool and gardens and simple living. Bliss. Thank you for allowing us to stay.

Chateau de Carsac is the perfect place to unwind and relax with family and friends. We had a beautiful week here relaxing by the pool, enjoying the garden and the surrounding countryside, towns and their markets. The main chateau and the two gites are lovely with everything you might need for a week away. We hope to be back!

From your seat on the terrace looking across the vines to the ruins of the Château de Gurson on the opposite hill you feel like you're on top of the world. A big family friendly pool invites you in and the park and the lakes encourage you to unleash the explorer inside! A wonderful mixed orchard means that there are fruits from May to September and there's a swing in the garden or a hammock in the park too.

The neighbourhood

You're nestled on the edge of a tiny village and the approach to the house is awesome, with the lake and fruit trees. Villefranche-de-Lonchat is less than ten minutes away and there's a bakery that will deliver daily, a couple of places to eat and a bar. In the summer there's a night market each Friday. Explore St Emilion, perfect spot for wine lovers, or to Montpon for a pizza cabin.

Just over a mile away, the ruined Chateau de Gurson overlooks the Lac de Gurson, a charming swimming lake with beach, playground, cafe, and kayaking and paddle boarding in the summer months.
Cycling and walking routes thread their way between villages and vineyards in the beautiful countryside around the chateau. Just next door, Vincent the vigneron makes the excellent Reve de Ternac wine, and always welcomes visitors to taste and buy.
You're 30 minutes from St Emilion, a remarkable medieval town at the centre of one of the world's premier wine regions. Stroll the cobbled streets, explore the life of the eponymous saint, buy fabulous wine and have lunch in one of the many great bistros.
The chic, cosmopolitan city of Bordeaux is just an hour away. From flea markets to designer boutiques to the foodie heaven of the Marché du Capucins, there's shopping for everyone. Bordeaux also boasts museums, theatres and a thriving culinary scene.
Dordogne markets are full of life, and a chance to find local specialties like heritage vegetables, foie gras, and Perigord truffles. The Saturday market in St Foy le Grande, just 15 minutes away, has been voted one of the best markets in France.
For trips further afield, the beaches and surfing of Arcachon and Cap Ferret are reachable for a day trip, as are the castles, caves and bastide towns of the upper Dordogne.

Justine & Michael Elliott

Michael and Justine bought the château and gites as an escape from their busy London life (she's an anaesthetist, he's a technology manager) and want their two sons to have the opportunity to have a great outside adventure. Their neighbours, Jill and Bill, act as property managers and will do the meet and greet.
