The Experience

Bring everybody. As well as a large sitting room you’ll also find a games room with pool table, a separate dining room, a TV room with a huge screen and a kitchen with another dining area. All the rooms on the ground floor have French windows leading out to a lovely terrace for outdoor meals overlooking the lake to one side and the swimming pool to the other. Swathes of lawn are perfect for games or sunbathing and eleven acres of woodland are yours to explore.

Bedrooms are traditional and all have the wonderful views, bathrooms are plentiful and squeaky-clean and mercifully free of bling. In spite of its size the house feels homely and large groups have masses of space to spread out. Find two good bottles of wine from the owners’ cellar in the kitchen to welcome you, along with bread, cheese, pâté, and honey from the housekeeper’s bees.

Thiviers is a ten-minute walk for a weekly market, a train station and plenty of restaurants and cafés.

Reviews

My extended family and I had a wonderful week staying at this property. It was very spacious but also really homely for our party of 10 and the grounds were perfect for our small children to run around in with lots of different areas to explore. Richard was a fantastic host, giving us lots of great recommendations for what to do in the local area and at the property itself (including a chef and some wine tasting at the property).

We had a very enjoyable time. The whole extended family of 11 aged from 74 to 18 months had a lovely week. The house suited us all, particularly the garden and pool. Excellent breakfast baguettes from just down the road and the food and wine that the Dordogne can provide.

Nigel, London

12 of us stayed for a week, with 2 young children, we had a beautiful week that went far too quickly. The bedrooms are huge, the kitchen very well equipped for a French rental, views are fabulous from an elevated position, and seclusion and privacy are guaranteed. An excellent Lidl is less than 5 mins drive away, and the 2 fridges and dishwashers a real bonus. When working out the costings per head for 12 people, it is a good deal, to experience authentic French Chateau living, and an excellent vase for exploring the Dordogne.

Martin, Bracknell

Loved the house. We had 14 of us staying and plenty of room, all bedrooms ensuite. Great pool and kids had fun in the forest. Beautifully decorated and nicely equipped (felt like a proper home vs a rental, but no clutter). Went to Thiviers a few times for restaurants (10-15min walk to burn off the food!). St jean de Cole and Périgueux are nearby beautiful towns. Owners really helpful - thank you. Used their cook who was great. Found it via Sawday’s - always been nice places, as guess properly selected. Would love to go again.

La Château de la Guerinche is a beautiful, 17th Century French manor set in 15 acres of its own wooded grounds. It is wonderfully remote and tranquil, yet a ten minute walk to the bustling, traditional French town of Thiviers. You will love the large, luxurious French-style rooms; cosy fires; family-friendly kitchen; the airy spaciousness and many French windows leading into the gardens.

Sheila, Sawday's Inspector

We had a wonderful stay. Thank you so much. The house is beautifully decorated and full of character. We stayed put of season but many of the days were warm, place less crowded and lots to do around the area (recommend the caves, st Jean de coles (restaurants), Brantome and Perigueux). Makes it so much easier that you can walk to Thiviers for supermarkets, croissants and if you don’t want to drive for dinner. Would love to come back.

George, London

The chateau was beautiful, the place was spotless and very well looked after, the outdoor views was amazing, local town, thiviers, was just 5 minutes away, would definitely book this chateau again,

Location

The neighbourhood

Walks start from the door and the landscape is wooded and undulating with far-reaching views on all sides. There is a restaurant 1.5kms away which does a hearty traditional French lunch, otherwise there are plenty of places to eat in Thiviers. In the winter months you can visit the famous foie-gras and truffle markets. Périgueux is 35 minutes in the car, Limoges and Brive each just over an hour.

Local points of interest from Richard & Poppy Skinner

  • Welcome to the beautiful Château de la Guerinche, a much-loved château dating back to the 18th Century. The main Chateau can now sleep 14 with the Grange soon to open (an extra 4-6) - please let us know if interested
  • The local town has 4 great supermarkets. A mixture of lovely restaurants. We have a butcher, 3 great bakeries and the most wonderful Saturday market which is a must-visitWe have a great chef living nearby for those interested
  • Chateau de la Guerinchie was built in the early 17th Century for the Comtes de Tessyiere military family. Designed to be the archetypal manor house, the family helped design and create their perfect Maison. It stayed within the family for over 300 years
  • The Chateau is around 2.5 hours to the large town of Bordeaux by car, 55 minutes to Limoges, 30 minutes to Perigueux and an hour to Bergerac. Both Limgoes, Bordeaux & Bergerac have airports with UK and French links
  • Thiviers train station has links to trains to all major towns and even Paris
  • While many period features are still in place, important updates mean amazing wifi (recent Starlink), modern bathrooms, renovated kitchen, cinema room (80inch TV) and a slate based pool table

Introducing

Richard & Poppy Skinner

Richard (a strategy consultant) and Poppy (a fashion and travel writer) met in London but are now settled in Singapore. They bought the house so that their extended families (Richard's in England and Poppy's in Rome) could get together for long family holidays. They spend theirs here too and hope you enjoy the house and surroundings as much as they do.
