The Experience

Sweep down the driveway bursting with hydrangeas and day lilies to this gorgeous turreted château tucked in the hillside overlooking a verdant, tree-filled valley. Inside find oodles of space in all the guest rooms plus spoiling en suite bathrooms that are large enough for spa treatments and massages if you fancy, and much to do onsite: borrow a book from the library, relax in one of three salons, play tennis, splash in the pool, join ‘an experience’.

Breakfast on overnight oats, fresh fruit from the orchards, honey buzzed in from hives in the garden, local breads and pastries, homemade jams and lashings of coffee to set you up for exploring the Dordogne’s many delights. Expect vineyards to visit and truffles to hunt, charming towns including Périgueux and Bergerac, and restaurants, cafés and bars all within a few kilometres.

Or simply take a picnic down to the river, stroll through the woods, snooze in your lovely bedroom.

This is a stunning, stylish, unique property allowing guests to stay in a sympathetically restored Renaissance château whilst enjoying the best of modern day life. It's a gem.

Location

The neighbourhood

You can walk 30 minutes or cycle (it's steep in parts) into Saint-Aquilin (3km) which has a good restaurant – but you do need to book ahead. Saint-Astier (5km) has heaps of restaurants and bars to choose from and a thriving Thursday morning market. There are miles of woodland and country walks from the door and much to do nearby: visit vibrant Périgueux (26km) and history-rich Bergerac (46km).

Introducing

Don & Jennifer Macdonald

Jennifer and Don are originally from the US and lived and worked in Germany before deciding to open up a B&B and self-catering house. They looked at many properties, including a castle in Scotland and a big house in the Lake District, before widening their search to Europe. They looked at 75 properties in France before finally (and reluctantly) viewing Château de Belet, which turned out to be the one!
